Narrated Mu`adha: `Aisha said, "Allah's Messenger used to take the permission of that wife with whom he was supposed to stay overnight if he wanted to go to one other than her, after this Verse was revealed:-- "You (O Muhammad) can postpone (the turn of) whom you will of them (your wives) and you may receive any (of them) whom you will; and there is no blame on you if you invite one whose turn you have set aside (temporarily). (33.51) I asked Aisha, "What did you use to say (in this case)?" She said, "I used to say to him, "If I could deny you the permission (to go to your other wives) I would not allow your favor to be bestowed on any other person."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) states that among the women who offered themselves to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he did not keep any of them with himself, even though Allah the Exalted had made this permissible for him. However, in any case, this was dependent upon his own will.
This was a specific permission granted to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Qastallani said that although Allah the Pure granted you permission in this verse that the observance of turns (bari) was not obligatory upon you, you still maintained the system of turns, and during the turn of one wife, you did not stay at the house of another wife.
The narration of ‘Abad ibn ‘Abad has been connected (wasl) by Ibn Marduyah.
The narration of Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) has been transmitted by Tabari.

Hadith Commentary:
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was granted the permission that he could stay with whichever wife he wished. It was not obligatory upon him to assign turns, but despite this, he observed this practice. When he would go on a journey, he would draw lots and take one of his wives with him.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Hibah wa Fadluha wa al-Ta‘ridhu ‘alayha, Hadith: 2593)
When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam became ill and his illness became severe, he sought permission from his other wives to stay in my house. All the Mothers of the Believers radi Allahu anhunna ajma‘een wholeheartedly granted him permission.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Hibah wa Fadluha wa al-Ta‘ridhu ‘alayha, Hadith: 2588)
This was a special characteristic of his: he was given the choice regarding assigning turns among his wives. He could suspend the turn of whomever he wished, meaning he would not have marital relations with her, and he could maintain this relationship with whomever he wished.
