وَقَالَ مَعْمَرٌ : التَّبَرُّجُ أَنْ تُخْرِجَ مَحَاسِنَهَا : سُنَّةَ اللَّهِ : اسْتَنَّهَا جَعَلَهَا .
Mu'ammar said that «تبرج» means that a woman displays her beauty before a man. «سنة الله» refers to the way that Allah has prescribed for Himself.

Narrated `Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) Allah's Messenger came to me when Allah ordered him to give option to his wives. So Allah's Messenger started with me, saying, "I am going to mention to you something but you should not hasten (to give your reply) unless you consult your parents.' He knew that my parents would not order me to leave him. Then he said, "Allah says:-- "O Prophet! Say to your wives..." (33.28-29) On that I said to him, "Then why should I consult my parents? Verily, I seek Allah, His Apostle and the Home of the Hereafter."

Hadith Commentary:
1.
When Aisha radi Allahu anha requested the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam not to inform the other noble wives radi Allahu anhunna ajma‘een of her response, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied, “If anyone asks, I will not conceal this answer, because Allah did not send me as harsh or ill-tempered, but rather sent me as gentle and as a teacher.” (Sahih Muslim, al-Talaq, Hadith: 3690. (1478))
Accordingly, when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited this verse before the other noble wives radi Allahu anhunna ajma‘een, each one chose Allah and His Messenger. This is because every heart was illuminated with the light of faith due to the companionship and presence of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam; how could they prefer the world and its adornments over Allah and His Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam? Thus, none of them preferred the world; rather, they all chose to remain with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
2.
It should be clear that merely giving the wife the option (of separation) does not result in divorce (talaq) unless she chooses divorce. Thus, Aisha radi Allahu anha narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave us the option, and we chose him, so merely being given the option was not counted as divorce. (Sahih Muslim, al-Talaq, Hadith: 3687. (1477))
