Hadith Commentary:
"Ma'ad" refers to a person's city, because after traveling, he returns to the same place.
This verse was revealed during the migration from Makkah to Madinah.
At that time, Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was given the glad tidings that he would return to his city, Makkah al-Mukarramah.
And the phrase ﴿وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهذَا الْبَلَدِ﴾ also conveys this meaning; thus, Allah Ta'ala fulfilled His promise eight years after the migration, and in the 8th year of Hijrah, you sallallahu alayhi wa sallam returned to Makkah al-Mukarramah in a victorious manner.
