Hadith 4755

Narrated Masruq: `Aisha said that Hassan bin Thabit came and asked permission to visit her. I said, "How do you permit such a person?" She said, "Hasn't he received a severely penalty?" (Sufyan, the subnarrator, said: She meant the loss of his sight.) Thereupon Hassan said the following poetic verse: "A chaste pious woman who arouses no suspicion. She never talks about chaste heedless women behind their backs.' On that she said, "But you are not so."

Hadith Commentary:
O Hassaan! You were absent during the time of the storm and you falsely accused me.

The translation of the mentioned verse of poetry has been rendered by Hazrat Maulana Waheed uz-Zaman as follows:
She is intelligent, pure, free from every fault, that fortunate one;
She spends the morning hungry, she does not eat the flesh of the innocent.

Hazrat Aisha radi Allahu anha used the phrase "great punishment" because Hazrat Hassaan bin Thabit al-Ansari radi Allahu anhu eventually became blind.

This mentioned verse of poetry alludes to the verse of the Noble Qur’an in which backbiting is likened to eating the flesh of one’s dead brother.

That is, those women who are heedless and careless, due to this habit, you do not mention any of their faults in front of others, because this is backbiting, and backbiting is equivalent to eating the flesh of your dead brother.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
Aisha radi Allahu anha admonished Hassan bin Thabit radi Allahu anhu that by joining those who made accusations, he did not safeguard himself from eating the flesh of people through backbiting. However, she also used to defend Hassan radi Allahu anhu; she said: Hassan radi Allahu anhu used to defend the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 4146)

2.
Hassan radi Allahu anhu certainly made the mistake of making an accusation, but he repented from this crime. In any case, Aisha radi Allahu anha’s heart became clear regarding the Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in who had made the accusation, due to their mistake; but whenever this incident was mentioned, it was natural for her heart to feel sorrow. In this context as well, Aisha radi Allahu anha made a pointed remark about Hassan bin Thabit radi Allahu anhu in light of this impression. And Allah knows best.
