أَتْرَفْنَاهُمْ ، وَسَّعْنَاهُمْ .
The meaning of «أترفناهم» is: We have expanded their provision.
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Regarding the Verse: "And among men is he who worships Allah's as it were on the very edge." (22.11). A man used to come to Medina as if his wife brought a son and his mares produces offspring. He would say, "This religion (Islam) is good," but if his wife did not give birth to a child and his mares produced no offspring, he would say, "This religion is bad."

Hadith Commentary:
➊
This hadith describes the condition of a person who remains afflicted with doubt, suspicion, and hesitation regarding the religion.
He does not attain steadfastness in the religion because his intention is solely to acquire worldly benefits; as long as he continues to receive them, it is fine, but if not, he reverts to disbelief and polytheism.
In contrast, those who are true Muslims and filled with faith and certainty remain steadfast upon the religion regardless of hardship or prosperity.
When they are blessed with favors, they express gratitude, and if they are afflicted with difficulties, they exercise patience.
➋
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah, with reference to some narrations, has stated that this characteristic was described regarding newly converted Bedouins.
