حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ فِي بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ ، وَالْكَهْفِ ، وَمَرْيَمَ : " إِنَّهُنَّ مِنَ الْعِتَاقِ الْأُوَلِ ، وَهُنَّ مِنْ تِلَادِي ، فَسَيُنْغِضُونَ إِلَيْكَ رُءُوسَهُمْ " ، قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : " يَهُزُّونَ " ، وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ : نَغَضَتْ سِنُّكَ ، أَيْ تَحَرَّكَتْ .

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The meaning of "‘itaq" is both "excellent" and "ancient."
Since these surahs contain strange and wondrous events, and from them, instructive lessons are derived, and these events are related to ancient times, therefore both meanings are correct.
2.
Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu) expresses his fondness and affection for these surahs in these words: that these surahs are among my ancient memorized possessions and have been imprinted upon my mind for a long time.
