Hadith 4700

The meaning of «ألم تر» is «ألم تعلم», that is, "Have you not known?" It is in «ألم تر كيف», «ألم تر إلى الذين خرجوا». «البوار» is «الهلاك». The meaning of «بورا» is destruction, which is the root of «بار يبور». The meaning of «قوما بورا» is "the destroyed nation."
Narrated Ata: When Ibn `Abbas heard:-- "Have you not seen those who have changed the favor of Allah into disbelief?" (14.28) he said, "Those were the disbelieving pagans of Mecca."

Hadith Commentary:
Those who did not value Allah’s blessing of Islam, were deprived of the wealth of faith, and led their people to destruction.
They were destroyed at Badr.
If they had accepted Islam, this situation would not have arisen. The Ali ibn Abdullah mentioned in the chain is the son of Abdullah ibn Ja‘far (radi Allahu anhu), and is famous by the name Ibn al-Madini.
He was a hadith scholar (hafiz al-hadith).
His teacher, Ibn al-Mahdi, said that Ibn al-Madini knew and recognized the Prophetic hadiths more than anyone else.
Imam al-Nasa’i (rahimahullah) said that he was born for this very service.
He passed away in Dhu al-Qa‘dah, 234 AH, at the age of 73.
Rahimahullah ta‘ala.

Hadith Commentary:

The disbelievers of Makkah were the polytheist Qurayshi leaders who, at that time, held the reins of all of Arabia.
These people were the custodians of the House of Allah (Baytullah), and it was due to this custodianship that they were honored throughout Arabia. Allah, the Exalted, sent the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) for their guidance; this was Allah’s second favor upon them. However, these people responded to Allah’s blessings with stubbornness and enmity.
They girded themselves for opposition to the truth and continued to increase in this opposition, until they themselves were destroyed and left their nation destroyed as well. After death, they themselves will enter Hellfire and will also drag their followers down with them.

In this regard, we should also reflect upon ourselves: after utilizing so many of Allah’s blessings, how much gratitude do we actually show for them? The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you are ungrateful, indeed, My punishment is severe.” (: Ibrahim 14:7)
