Hadith 4694

وَحَاشَ وَحَاشَى تَنْزِيهٌ وَاسْتِثْنَاءٌ حَصْحَصَ وَضَحَ
«حاش وحاشا» (with alif) means to declare purity and to make an exception. The meaning of «حصحص» is "became clear."
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ تَلِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ مُضَرَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ،عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ لُوطًا ، لَقَدْ كَانَ يَأْوِي إِلَى رُكْنٍ شَدِيدٍ ، وَلَوْ لَبِثْتُ فِي السِّجْنِ مَا لَبِثَ يُوسُفُ ، لَأَجَبْتُ الدَّاعِيَ ، وَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ مِنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، إِذْ قَالَ لَهُ : أَوَلَمْ تُؤْمِنْ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنْ لِيَطْمَئِنَّ قَلْبِي سورة البقرة آية 260 .
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on (Prophet) Lot. (When his nation troubled him) he wished if he could betake himself to some powerful support; and if I were to remain in prison for the period Joseph had remained, I would surely respond to the call; and we shall have more right (to be in doubt) than Abraham: When Allah said to him, "Don't you believe?' Abraham said, 'Yes, (I do believe) but to be stronger in faith; (2.260)

Hadith Commentary:

In this hadith, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) praised the patience and forbearance of Sayyiduna Yusuf (alayhis salam), that despite remaining in the prison for a long period, he did not act hastily. Rather, displaying patience and resolve, he wished that the injustice and oppression underlying his stay in the prison be clearly explained. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), by saying (لَأَجَبْتُ الدَّاعِيَ) ("I would have responded to the caller"), expressed his perfect servitude and humility.


In any case, when Prophet Yusuf (alayhis salam) saw that the king of Egypt was now inclined towards kindness, he did not prefer to be freed merely by the king’s favor. Instead, he gave precedence to the affirmation of his elevated character and chastity, so that the beauty and loftiness of his character would become clear before the world. For a caller to Allah (da‘i ilallah), chastity, purity, and high character are very necessary. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) praised precisely this character in this hadith.


From this character, it is also understood that the effect of deceit and trickery is limited and temporary; in the end, the victory belongs to the truth and the people of truth, even if, temporarily, the people of truth have to pass through trials and tribulations. And Allah is the One whose help is sought.

Hadith Commentary:
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is praising the patience and steadfastness of Prophet Yusuf (alayhis salam), stating that he did not wish to leave the prison until his innocence was publicly and royally proclaimed.
﴿قَالَ رَبِّ السِّجْنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا يَدْعُونَنِي إِلَيْهِ﴾ (Yusuf: 33)
This verse also expresses his elevated status and great rank.
Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ajma‘een.
Ameen.
This is the very characteristic of those beloved to Allah.

Hadith Commentary:

In this hadith, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) praised our master Yusuf (alayhis salam) for not preferring to leave the prison until his innocence was openly and royally declared. Prophet Yusuf (alayhis salam) had supplicated to Allah:
"O my Lord! Prison is dearer to me than that to which these women are inviting me." ()


When Prophet Yusuf (alayhis salam) interpreted the dream and provided the means to avert its consequences, the Aziz of Egypt was greatly impressed. He said: "Bring this man to me so that I may benefit from his presence." However, Yusuf (alayhis salam) refused to come out of prison. The purpose was that until the matter was fully investigated and his innocence was completely clarified, he was not willing to leave prison, because he wanted that not even a suspicion should remain in the heart of any uninformed person that perhaps Yusuf had any fault in this matter.


The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said this out of humility and modesty. Otherwise, he was a mountain of resolve and steadfastness.

Hadith Commentary:
Under this hadith, Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah states:
His statement, "May Allah forgive Lut! He used to seek refuge in a strong support," means: he sought refuge in Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is alluding to the statement of Allah Most High: "If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support" (). It is said that among the people of Lut, there was no one related to him by lineage, because the people of that town were from Sodom, which is in the region of Sham (Greater Syria), while the origin of Ibrahim and Lut was from Iraq. When Ibrahim alayhis salam migrated to Sham, Lut alayhis salam migrated with him. Then Allah sent Lut to the people of Sodom. So he said: "If only I had some protection, relatives, and clan, I would have sought help from them against you so that they could defend my guests from you." For this reason, in some chains of this hadith, as narrated by Ahmad from the route of Muhammad ibn Amr from Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, it is reported: Lut said, "If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support." He (the Prophet) said: "Indeed, he used to seek refuge in a strong support, but he meant his clan. And Allah did not send any Prophet except at the peak of his people." Ibn Mardawayh added from this route: "Have you not seen the statement of the people of Shu'ayb: 'Were it not for your family, we would have stoned you'?" (). And it is said that the meaning of his statement, "He used to seek refuge in a strong support," is: to his clan, but he did not seek refuge with them; rather, he sought refuge with Allah. (Para 13, Fath al-Bari, p. 244)

That is, may Allah the Exalted forgive Lut alayhis salam.
His support was indeed very strong, meaning Allah the Exalted was his support. Thus, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam alluded to the Divine statement: "If only I had against you some power..." (the verse).
It is said that among the people of Lut, there was no one related to him by lineage, because the inhabitants of that town were from Sodom, which is in Sham, and the original lineage of Ibrahim alayhis salam and Lut alayhis salam was from the people of Iraq. When Ibrahim alayhis salam migrated towards Sham, Lut alayhis salam also migrated with him.
Then Allah sent Lut alayhis salam to the people of Sodom.
That is why he said this statement: if I had helpers, relatives, and family, I would have sought help from them against you so that they could defend my guests from you.
For this reason, it is narrated in some traditions that, without doubt, Lut alayhis salam had a family for his support, but he did not seek their protection; rather, he sought refuge with Allah the Exalted.
The mention of the people of Lut and their immoralities occurs in several places in the Noble Qur'an.
This nation had advanced in immorality and disbelief.
Allah the Exalted destroyed their towns completely.
It is said that the place where the Dead Sea is located today is the very place where the towns of this nation were.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The indication of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was towards this noble verse:
“Lut said: If only I had strength to resist you or could take refuge in a strong support.” (Hud: 80/11)
As mentioned earlier, Ibrahim (alayhis salam) had sent him to the region of Sodom for the purpose of calling and preaching.
There, he was a stranger in the land, because this town was in the region of Sham, while he was a resident of Iraq. Furthermore, none of his family members were there except for one wife, who was secretly with the people and was extremely disloyal to Lut (alayhis salam).
When the people of Lut (alayhis salam) became intent on behaving indecently with his guests, he said:
“If only I had personal strength, or if I had any family or tribe here who would defend my honor today.”
After this, all the prophets who were sent were those with large groups and tribes.
It is likely that the people of Shu’ayb, alluding to familial influence and power, had said:
“If it were not for your family, we would have stoned you.” (Hud: 91/11)

Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) says:
“When Lut (alayhis salam) became anxious upon seeing the state of his guests, at that time he said this, wishing to take refuge in some strong support.
It is also possible that he, in reality, sought refuge in Allah, but as an excuse, he expressed these words before his guests.
After this, even the angels could not remain silent and said:
‘Do not be so distressed; we are not boys, but angels sent by Allah.
These people will not only fail to harm us, but they will not be able to harm you either.
When a part of the night has passed, take your family and leave this town, and none of you should look back. However, your wife will be afflicted by what will befall them. The time for their punishment has been set for the morning.’
Thus, they were wiped from the face of the earth.”

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: Prophet Lut (alayhis salam) was a resident of Iraq. Sodom, which is a region of Sham (Greater Syria), was not the place where his family and tribe resided. That is why he expressed the wish: "If only my family and tribe were here today, they would assist and support me." Outwardly, it appeared that he gave preference to apparent means (family and lineage) over hidden means (trust and reliance upon Allah), and placed his reliance upon them. Therefore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "May Allah have mercy on Lut (alayhis salam), may He forgive him."
