Hadith 4687

«زلفا» means repeatedly, that is, «مزدلفة» happens frequently. Because people come there from time to time, and «زلف» is also called stages. The word «زلفى» which is in Surah Sad, like «قربى», meaning nearness. The meaning of «ازدلفوا» is "they gathered." «أزلفنا» is transitive, meaning "We gathered." A person had committed the act of touching a non-mahram woman with his hand or merely kissing her, regarding which this verse was revealed.
Narrated Ibn Masud: A man kissed a woman and then came to Allah's Messenger and told him of that, so this Divine Inspiration was revealed to the Prophet 'And offer Prayers perfectly at the two ends of the day, and in some hours of the night; (i.e. (five) compulsory prayers). Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds (small sins) That is a reminder for the mindful.' (11.114) The man said, Is this instruction for me only?' The Prophet said, "It is for all those of my followers who encounter a similar situation."

Hadith Commentary:
That is, after committing a sin, he should feel remorseful.
He should repent with a sincere heart and perform the prayer, then Allah will forgive his sins.
By "both ends," the Fajr and Maghrib prayers are meant, and from "the night," the Isha prayer is intended.
The mention of the Dhuhr and Asr prayers is found in other verses; those who deny hadith and accept only three prayers are not even familiar with the Noble Qur'an.
May Allah grant them sound understanding.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
In one narration, the details of this incident are mentioned.
A man came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and said:
O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! I have done everything with a woman except intercourse.
I am present, so decide about me as you wish.
Hazrat Umar (radi Allahu anhu) said:
Allah had concealed this for you.
It would have been better if you had also concealed it yourself. But the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not reply to him. He got up and left, so the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent a man after him and called him back, and recited the mentioned verse to him. A man from the people said:
O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! Is this ruling specific to him? He replied:
"No, rather it is for all people."
(Sahih Muslim, At-Tawbah, Hadith 7004 (2763))
In another narration it is stated:
"Did you not perform ablution (wudu) properly and offer prayer?" He said:
Why not! The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Allah has forgiven your sin."
(Sahih Muslim, At-Tawbah, Hadith 7007 (2765))

2.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"The five prayers, from one Friday to the next Friday, and from one Ramadan to the next Ramadan, are expiation for the sins committed between them, as long as major sins are avoided."
(Sahih Muslim, At-Taharah, Hadith 552 (233))

3.
There are three ways in which good deeds erase bad deeds:
➊ Whoever performs good deeds abundantly, his sins are forgiven.
➋ He becomes free from the habit of evil.
➌ In a society where good deeds are performed abundantly, evils automatically begin to depart from there.
And Allah knows best.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Some sins are greater or lesser than other sins. The greater the sin, the greater the good deed required for its forgiveness.

➋ That person was remorseful over his sin and was ready to perform every expiation for its forgiveness. For this reason, the sin was forgiven due to the blessing of the prayer (salah). Whoever is not remorseful and considers the sin insignificant, even his minor sin becomes major.

➌ The context of revelation (shan-e-nuzul) of the verse clarifies its meaning and purport, but the ruling mentioned in the verse applies to all members of the Ummah.

➍ If a sin is committed, one should immediately perform a good deed—for example, offer a voluntary prayer (nafl salah) and supplicate for forgiveness of the sin, or give charity (sadaqah, khayrat), or perform any other good deed that is appropriate for the forgiveness of that sin, such as remembrance (dhikr), recitation (tilawah), or voluntary fasting (nafl sawm), etc.
