Narrated Shaqiq: Abu Mas`ud Al-Ansari said, "Allah's Messenger , used to order us to give alms. So one of us would exert himself to earn one Mud (special measure of wheat or dates, etc.,) to give in charity; while today one of us may have one hundred thousand." Shaqiq said: As if Abu Masud referred to himself.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
At the time of the Battle of Tabuk, there was a famine; the crops had not yet ripened, the journey was long and arduous, and the opposition was the Roman Empire, which was the most powerful and formidable force of that era. There was also a shortage of weapons and mounts. For this reason, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) made a strong appeal for the jihad fund, as a result of which Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) and Abdur Rahman (radi Allahu anhu) participated with great enthusiasm and donated so much that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) became pleased.
Sayyiduna Umar (radi Allahu anhu) brought half of his household goods for the jihad fund, while Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (radi Allahu anhu) brought all of his household goods.
In short, both the wealthy and the laborers donated according to their means.
However, no one was safe from the taunts of the hypocrites.
➋
Abu Mas’ud al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) indicated at the end of the hadith that at that time, he too had earned through labor and given charity, and today Allah Ta’ala has given him so much that he deals in millions.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) writes that the purpose of this was to show that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), despite scarcity of wealth, people would work and give charity.
Now Allah Ta’ala has opened the doors of wealth and prosperity for them.
They give charity and alms with great ease.
They are not gripped by the fear of poverty.
(Fath al-Bari: 8/422)
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
From this, it is also established that during the Prophetic era, the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) used to willingly engage in labor and work.
They would even do porterage, and then from whatever wages they received, they would also give charity.
May Allah, the Exalted, grant them countless rewards on behalf of the Ummah, for through this hard work they irrigated the tree of Islam. Today, all praise is due to Allah, it is the same Madinah whose inhabitants have greatly increased in prosperity and abundance.
Today, there are so many magnificent palaces present in Madinah.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
There is no humiliation in earning wages by carrying loads; rather, bearing a burden is better than the disgrace of begging. Just as abandoning work and labor leads to the disgrace of begging, similarly, abandoning charity and almsgiving leads to poverty and disgrace in the Hereafter. In one hadith, the best charity is described as that which does not render a person needy afterward, but rather leaves him self-sufficient. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Zakat, Hadith: 1426) From this hadith, a misconception may arise that only a wealthy person whose wealth exceeds his needs should give charity, and one who has nothing should not give charity or alms. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has presented the aforementioned chapter heading and hadith to dispel this misconception: in the early period, the Companions radi Allahu anhum did not possess anything, but when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded them to give charity, they would go to the market, earn something by carrying loads, obtain some grain, and give it in the way of Allah.
(2)
How great was the zeal of the Companions radi Allahu anhum for spending in the way of Allah! But alas, today those who possess millions do not even consider charity and almsgiving. The Companions used to work so that they could spend it in the way of Allah. Indeed, this is the kind of spending (infaq) that produces the light of wisdom in the heart, which is a very great treasure.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Abu Mas’ud Al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) was a venerable and eminent Companion who participated in the Battle of Badr. He passed away before the year 40 Hijri. He stated that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), there was a scarcity of wealth, but there was a great eagerness for generosity. The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) used to engage in labor and work. Whatever wages they received, they would give in charity and alms. However, later, due to the abundance of conquests, wealth and riches became plentiful, and miserliness began to appear. There was no shortage of wealth, but contentment of the heart was no longer present. In any case, the act of the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) earning through labor and spending even a mudd (a small measure) in the way of Allah carries more reward than our thousands and millions of rupees. (Fath al-Bari: 3/359)

It should be noted that there are two subjects in the heading: One is that salvation from the Fire of Hell can be attained through even a small amount of charity and alms. This subject has been established in the aforementioned ahadith. The second subject is attaining salvation by giving even a piece of a date; for this, the upcoming ahadith are being presented.

Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
Certainly, a single dirham from that era will surpass one hundred thousand dirhams of today in terms of reward. And Allah knows best.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) attained the highest level of generosity, such that even when they themselves were deserving of assistance, they would not accept aid; rather, even in such poverty, they would labor and give charity.
➋ The Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would make every possible effort to comply with the command of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), even though the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would not command anyone by name to give charity. Still, they would strive to be among those who fulfilled his command.
➌ Spending in the way of Allah (fi sabilillah) brings a good reward even in this world, in the form of prosperity.
➍ Abu Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu) narrated his circumstances, but did not clarify that this was his own incident, so that it would not be considered showing off (riya’), even though his intention was to encourage the listeners towards this good deed. This demonstrates the sincerity of the Companions (radi Allahu anhum).
