Hadith 4666

Narrated Ibn Abi Mulaika: We entered upon Ibn `Abbas and he said "Are you not astonished at Ibn Az-Zubair's assuming the caliphate?" I said (to myself), "I will support him and speak of his good traits as I did not do even for Abu Bakr and `Umar though they were more entitled to receive al I good than he was." I said "He (i.e Ibn Az-Zubair) is the son of the aunt of the Prophet and the son of AzZubair, and the grandson of Abu Bakr and the son of Khadija's brother, and the son of `Aisha's sister." Nevertheless, he considers himself to be superior to me and does not want me to be one of his friends. So I said, "I never expected that he would refuse my offer to support him, and I don't think he intends to do me any good, therefore, if my cousins should inevitably be my rulers, it will be better for me to be ruled by them than by some others."

Hadith Commentary:
In all these narrations, there is mention of the virtues of Hazrat Siddiq Akbar (radi Allahu anhu) in one way or another.
The very purpose of bringing these hadiths under this verse is this.
Such mutual conversations among the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) that have been transmitted are excusable on the basis that they too were all human beings.
They were not infallible from error.
We have been commanded to supplicate for good for all of them.
﴿Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not place in our hearts any rancor toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.﴾ () (Ameen)

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith as well, Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) has expressed a complaint about Abdullah bin Zubair (radi Allahu anhu), stating that despite my goodwill, he turns away from me. He does not wish for me to become close to him. In such circumstances, I too do not wish to express sincerity towards him if he does not value it. If this is the case, then I will cast my weight in the scale of Banu Umayyah, because they are my paternal cousins, and my obeying them is better than obeying others.

Note:
The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) are the shining stars of the sky and eyewitnesses to revelation, but they were human beings, not angels or prophets (alayhim as-salam). Whether it is Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) or Abdullah bin Zubair (radi Allahu anhu), both are worthy of respect for us. It is safer for us to remain silent regarding their mutual disputes. In this regard, Umar bin Abdul Aziz (rahimahullah) is the best example for us. He was asked about the people of Siffin, so he replied: "Allah Ta'ala has protected my hands from their blood, so now I do not wish to involve my tongue in it." (Al-Muwafaqat li’l-Shatibi: 4/320)

Allah Ta'ala has commanded us to pray for these personalities in these words:
"Our Lord! Forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not place in our hearts any rancor towards the believers. Our Lord! Indeed, You are Most Kind, Most Merciful." (: Al-Hashr 59:10)
