Hadith 4660

Narrated Zaid bin Wahb: I passed by (visited ) Abu Dhar at Ar-Rabadha and said to him, "What has brought you to this land?" He said, "We were at Sham and I recited the Verse: "They who hoard up gold and silver and spend them not in the way of Allah; announce to them a painful torment, " (9.34) where upon Muawiya said, 'This Verse is not for us, but for the people of the Scripture.' Then I said, 'But it is both for us (Muslim) and for them.' "

Hadith Commentary:

It was only on this issue that I had a dispute with Amir Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu).
Muawiyah wrote a complaint about me to Uthman (radi Allahu anhu).
He summoned me here from Syria.
I came to Madinah, and there too, many people gathered around me.
I mentioned this to Uthman (radi Allahu anhu), and he said that if you wish, you may go and live separately here. Because of this, I came and settled here in the wilderness.
Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (radi Allahu anhu) was a great ascetic and renouncer of the world.
Therefore, he did not get along well with other people.
Eventually, he became fond of solitude, and it was in this solitude that he passed away.

Hadith Commentary:

In another narration, the full details of this incident are described in these words:
I was in Syria when I had some dispute with Amir Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) regarding this verse.
He complained about me to Uthman (radi Allahu anhu), so he summoned me to Madinah Tayyibah.
When I arrived in Madinah Tayyibah, many people gathered around me, as if they had never seen me before.
I informed Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) of the situation, so he said:
If you wish, you may stay here separately.
I preferred to stay here.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Zakat, Hadith: 1406)

The position of Amir Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) was that this verse does not pertain to Muslims, provided that they pay zakat (obligatory charity), rather it is about the People of the Book. Whereas Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) said that this verse is general and includes both us and the People of the Book.
The majority of the scholars hold the view that if zakat is paid from wealth, then it is no longer considered a hoarded treasure (kanz) upon which the severe warning has been given.
And Allah knows best.
