Hadith 4629

Narrated `Abdullah: When:"...and confuse not their belief with wrong." (6.82) was revealed, the Prophet's companions said, "Which of us has not done wrong?" Then there was revealed:-- "Verily joining others in worship with Allah is a tremendous wrong indeed." (31.13)

Hadith Commentary:
The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) initially understood the word "zulm" (oppression/wrongdoing) in its general meaning, upon which Allah clarified that here "zulm" refers to shirk (associating partners with Allah).
If even the smallest amount of shirk is mixed with faith (iman), then the entirety of that faith is rendered void.

Hadith Commentary:

At this point, this hadith has been mentioned in brief, whereas in another place Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has narrated it in detail: when this verse was revealed, it was very burdensome for the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in), and they submitted to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that, “Who among us is there who has never committed any injustice?” The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“It is not as you have understood; rather, by ‘injustice’ here is meant shirk (associating partners with Allah). Have you not heard what Luqman said while advising his beloved son:
‘O my son! Do not commit shirk, for indeed shirk is a tremendous injustice.’”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Ahadith al-Anbiya, Hadith: 3429)

From this hadith, it is understood that although the language of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) was Arabic and the Qur’an was also revealed in the Arabic language, nevertheless, at times they faced difficulty in understanding the meaning of a verse.
And Allah knows best.
