Hadith 4623

وَإِذْ قَالَ اللَّهُ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ اللَّهُ وَإِذْ هَا هُنَا صِلَةٌ الْمَائِدَةُ أَصْلُهَا مَفْعُولَةٌ كَعِيشَةٍ رَاضِيَةٍ وَتَطْلِيقَةٍ بَائِنَةٍ وَالْمَعْنَى مِيدَ بِهَا صَاحِبُهَا مِنْ خَيْرٍ يُقَالُ مَادَنِي يَمِيدُنِي . وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : مُتَوَفِّيكَ : مُمِيتُكَ .
«وإذ قال الله» ( in «قال» ) means in the sense of «يقول», and «إذ» here is extra. «المائدة» is originally in the sense of «مفعولة» ( «ميمودة» ), although it is in the active participle form, like «عيشة», «راضية», and «تطليقة», as in «بائنة». So the meaning of «مائدة» is «مميده», that is, the good and benefit that is given to someone. From this comes «مادني يميدني». Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: In the meaning of «متوفيك» is "the one who will cause you to die." It can mean that Jesus, peace be upon him, will die at his appointed time in the end times.
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، قَالَ : الْبَحِيرَةُ الَّتِي يُمْنَعُ دَرُّهَا لِلطَّوَاغِيتِ فَلَا يَحْلُبُهَا أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ ، وَالسَّائِبَةُ : كَانُوا يُسَيِّبُونَهَا لِآلِهَتِهِمْ لَا يُحْمَلُ عَلَيْهَا شَيْءٌ ، قَالَ : وَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " رَأَيْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ عَامِرٍ الْخُزَاعِيَّ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ " ، كَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ سَيَّبَ السَّوَائِبَ ، وَالْوَصِيلَةُ : النَّاقَةُ الْبِكْرُ ، تُبَكِّرُ فِي أَوَّلِ نِتَاجِ الْإِبِلِ ، ثُمَّ تُثَنِّي بَعْدُ بِأُنْثَى ، وَكَانُوا يُسَيِّبُونَهَا لِطَوَاغِيتِهِمْ إِنْ وَصَلَتْ إِحْدَاهُمَا بِالْأُخْرَى لَيْسَ بَيْنَهُمَا ذَكَرٌ ، وَالْحَامِ : فَحْلُ الْإِبِلِ ، يَضْرِبُ الضِّرَابَ الْمَعْدُودَ ، فَإِذَا قَضَى ضِرَابَهُ وَدَعُوهُ لِلطَّوَاغِيتِ وَأَعْفَوْهُ مِنَ الْحَمْلِ ، فَلَمْ يُحْمَلْ عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ ، وَسَمَّوْهُ الْحَامِيَ . وقَالَ لِي أَبُو الْيَمَانِ : أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ،سَمِعْتُ سَعِيدًا ، قَالَ : يُخْبِرُهُ بِهَذَا ، قَالَ : وَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ : سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَهُ ، وَرَوَاهُ ابْنُ الْهَادِ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ ،عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Narrated Sa`id bin Al-Musaiyab: Bahira is a she-camel whose milk is kept for the idols and nobody is allowed to milk it; Sa'iba was the she-camel which they used to set free for their gods and nothing was allowed to be carried on it. Abu Huraira said: Allah's Messenger said, "I saw `Amr bin 'Amir Al-Khuza`i (in a dream) dragging his intestines in the Fire, and he was the first person to establish the tradition of setting free the animals (for the sake of their deities)," Wasila is the she-camel which gives birth to a she-camel as its first delivery, and then gives birth to another she-camel as its second delivery. People (in the Pre-lslamic periods of ignorance) used to let that she camel loose for their idols if it gave birth to two she-camels successively without giving birth to a male camel in between. 'Ham' was the male camel which was used for copulation. When it had finished the number of copulations assigned for it, they would let it loose for their idols and excuse it from burdens so that nothing would be carried on it, and they called it the 'Hami.' Abu Huraira said, "I heard the Prophet saying so."

Regarding ‘Amr bin Khuza‘i, Allamah ‘Ayni rahimahullah writes that his name was ‘Amr bin Luhayy bin Qam‘ah. He was among the chiefs of the tribe of Khuza‘ah. He was among those who, after the Jurhum, became custodians of the House of Allah (Baytullah). He was the first person who altered the religion of Ibrahim alayhis salam and introduced idols into the Hijaz. Furthermore, he incited the shepherds to worship idols and popularized the customs of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) among them. (Umdat al-Qari: 12/589)

In any case, Allah the Exalted did not legislate these animals in this manner; rather, He has specified every kind of vow and offering (nazr wa niyaz) exclusively for Himself. These methods of making vows and offerings for idols were invented by the polytheists (mushrikin). The practice of dedicating animals in the name of idols and presenting vows and offerings for them continues even today among the polytheists, and even among so-called Muslims. Allah the Exalted has not sent down any authority for this from the heavens. All of this is the way of the ignorant, which has become prevalent in our society. May Allah protect us from it.

Among ignorant Muslims, such evil customs are still prevalent today that they release animals in the name of their so-called pirs and spiritual guides, such as "Khawaja's goat," or prepare a cauldron (deg) in the name of the "Great Pir." Then, there are specific rituals associated with these acts, such that certain people may eat from it and others may not. All of these are matters of ignorance and misguidance. May Allah, the Exalted, grant such so-called Muslims sound understanding so that they refrain from this imitation of the disbelievers.

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith, several such animals are mentioned which the polytheists would set aside out of reverence for their false deities and would declare them forbidden for themselves.
The Noble Qur’an has strongly refuted this evil custom.

Among us as well, such evil customs are prevalent.
People set aside animals in the name of their so-called spiritual leaders, saying, “This is Khwaja’s goat,” or “These are the cows of Jhule Lal,” or “This is the cauldron of the great Pir.”
When the eleventh (of the Islamic month) comes, people do not sell the milk of their buffaloes, but rather dedicate it in the name of the great Pir Jilani.
All of these are matters of ignorance, misguidance, and deviation; Islam has no connection with them.
May Allah keep us firm upon the straight path and protect us from such acts of shirk.
