Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Some people were asking Allah's Messenger questions mockingly. A man would say, "Who is my father?" Another man whose she-camel had gone astray would say, "Where is my she-camel? "So Allah revealed this Verse in this connection: "O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble." (5.101)

Hadith Commentary:
1.
In reality, the hypocrites would ask the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) frivolous and unnecessary questions as a form of mockery and ridicule, and they would also encourage simple-minded Muslims to ask such questions. For example, Abdullah bin Hudhafah (radi Allahu anhu) asked about his father, as is clarified in another hadith.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Knowledge, Hadith: 93)
2.
These questions pertained to both rulings and commands. Thus, in some narrations, the reason for the revelation of this verse is stated to be regarding the command of Hajj.
(Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Tafsir al-Qur’an, Hadith: 3055)
3.
In any case, asking meaningless and frivolous questions is prohibited, because such questions increase doubts and suspicions, and there is also a risk of strictness in other rulings. Thus, in a hadith, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“The reason those before you were destroyed was that they used to ask their prophets too many questions and differed with them.”
(Sahih Muslim, Book of Virtues, Hadith: 6113 (1337))
