Hadith 4618

Narrated Jabir: Some people drank alcoholic beverages in the morning (of the day) of the Uhud battle and on the same day they were killed as martyrs, and that was before wine was prohibited.

Hadith Commentary:

In one hadith, it is mentioned that people began to say that there was wine in the stomachs of those martyrs, so Allah the Exalted revealed this verse:
"Those who believe and do righteous deeds, there is no sin upon them for what they consumed (before the prohibition of wine)."
(al-Ma'idah: 93/5)
Thus, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse in order to declare their innocence.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Tafsir, Hadith: 4620)

In any case, in this noble verse, the doubt has been removed as to whether the end of those martyrs was upon faith and piety or not. It has been made clear that their end was indeed upon faith, because at that time wine had not yet been made unlawful. However, wine is the mother of all evils (umm al-khaba'ith), which leaves a person fit for nothing; at times, it even renders the sons of nobles and hereditary landlords destitute and penniless.
May Allah protect us from it.
