Hadith Commentary:
This was the obedience and God-consciousness of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum): upon hearing the command of Allah, they repented forever.
This is the divine authority whose effect is upon the hearts.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
From this hadith, we learn about the loyalty and obedience of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in): as soon as they heard the divine command, they repented. Drinking wine was deeply ingrained in their nature, yet after hearing this prohibitive command, they did not tolerate letting even a single drop pass down their throats.

There are numerous hadiths narrated regarding the warning against drinking wine. A few are as follows:

"Whoever drinks wine and persists in it without repenting, and dies in that state, he will not drink it in the Hereafter." (Sahih Muslim, Al-Ashriba, Hadith: 5218. (2003))

"Whoever drinks an intoxicant, it is incumbent upon Allah to make him drink the mud of khabal." The Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) asked: O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), what is the mud of khabal? He replied: "The sweat of the people of Hell or the pus that flows from their wounds." (Sahih Muslim, Al-Ashriba, Hadith: 5217. (2002))

"Paradise is forbidden to three types of people: the one who is addicted to wine, the one who is disobedient to his parents, and the cuckold who tolerates wickedness among his family." (Musnad Ahmad: 2/69)

"If a wine-drinker dies in that state, he will meet Allah as one who worships idols." (Musnad Ahmad: 1/272. And Al-Albani's Al-Sahihah, Hadith: 677)

In any case, wine cannot be used even as medicine, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "It is not a cure, but rather a disease." (Sahih Muslim, Al-Ashriba, Hadith: 5141. (1984)) Nor is it permissible to convert it into vinegar. (Jami' al-Tirmidhi, Al-Buyu', Hadith: 1294) If any people persist in drinking wine, then the command is to fight them. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Ashriba, Hadith: 3683)
