Hadith 4602

And Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that by «الدرك أسفل» is meant the lowest level of Hell, and in Surah Al-An'am, «نفقا» means «سربا», that is, a tunnel is intended.
Narrated Al-Aswad: While we were sitting in a circle in `Abdullah's gathering, Hudhaifa came and stopped before us, and greeted us and then said, "People better than you became hypocrites." Al-Aswad said: I testify the uniqueness of Allah! Allah says: "Verily! The hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire." (4.145) On that `Abdullah smiled and Hudhaifa sat somewhere in the Mosque. `Abdullah then got up and his companions (sitting around him) dispersed. Hudhaifa then threw a pebble at me (to attract my attention). I went to him and he said, "I was surprised at `Abdullah's smile though he understood what I said. Verily, people better than you became hypocrite and then repented and Allah forgave them."

Hadith Commentary:
Aswad was astonished as to how the hypocrites could possibly be better than us Muslims.
Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu meant that those people were better than you, meaning they were in the era of the Companions radi Allahu anhum.
You are in the era of the Followers (Tabi‘in).
They became corrupt due to hypocrisy, turned away from the religion, but those among them who repented became accepted by Allah.

Hadith Commentary:

The intent of Hudhayfah (radi Allahu anhu) was that, during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), some people, after professing Islam, became apostates and fell into the disease of hypocrisy. And these were better people, because they lived in the era of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in), and the rank of the Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) is superior to that of the Tabi'in. However, due to their apostasy and becoming hypocrites, their quality of being better was lost. When some of them repented, their quality of being better was restored.

Hudhayfah (radi Allahu anhu) wanted to warn them that you are not from the best of generations; you should be even more fearful, because the acceptance of deeds depends on their ending. Beware lest you become complacent by relying on your deeds. In this way, there is also the danger of faith departing. It should also be kept in mind that none of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) ever became apostate; however, some Bedouins (A'rab) did indeed turn away from the religion.

The Bedouins who joined Musaylimah the Liar were also of this sort, or some Jews, as part of a conspiracy, outwardly accepted Islam and then became apostates. For example, among them was a Jewish scribe of revelation who, after becoming Muslim, became an apostate, and the earth did not accept him after his death.
