Narrated Ibn `Abbas: 'Allah is Sufficient for us and He Is the Best Disposer of affairs," was said by Abraham when he was thrown into the fire; and it was said by Muhammad when they (i.e. hypocrites) said, "A great army is gathering against you, therefore, fear them," but it only increased their faith and they said: "Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs, for us)." Hadith Commentary:
1.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has narrated this incident in more detail from Ibn Ishaq, that when Abu Sufyan returned with the Quraysh from the Battle of Uhud, he met Ma‘bad Khuzā‘ī. He said:
I have seen the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam with a very large army; those people who had stayed behind from the Battle of Uhud out of shame have also joined him. This caused Abu Sufyan and his companions to be compelled to turn back for an attack.
Thus, they turned back. Abu Sufyan sent word to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam through a few people that he was advancing with his companions to attack. Upon hearing this news, these words flowed from your blessed tongue:
﴿حَسْبُنَا اللَّـهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ﴾ (“Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs.”) It was on this occasion that this verse was revealed.
