Hadith 4558

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: The Verse:--"When two parties from among you were about to lose heart, but Allah was their Protector," (3.122) was revealed concerning us, and we were the two parties, i.e. Banu Haritha and Banu Salama, and we do not wish (that it had not been revealed) or I would not have been pleased (if it had not been revealed), for Allah says:--"...Allah was their Protector."

Explanation & Benefits

Hadith Commentary:
What greater virtue could there be than that we have attained the friendship (wilayah) of Allah?
The mention of our weakness is indeed correct.
In the face of this virtue, we have absolutely no regret over the exposure of this shortcoming.

Hadith Commentary:

In the Battle of Uhud, the Muslim army consisted of one thousand individuals, while the number of the polytheists was three thousand. During the march, the chief of the hypocrites took his three hundred men and turned back, at which point Banu Salamah from the Khazraj and Banu Harithah from the Aws also intended, out of cowardice, to slip away with the hypocrites. However, Allah, the Exalted, saved them, so they continued the march along with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

The meaning of what Jabir (radi Allahu anhu) said is that although this verse mentions our weakness, in the face of this virtue we do not feel any regret at all over the exposure of this flaw, because it also mentions Allah, the Exalted’s, patronage of us. We have, in fact, attained the guardianship (wilayah) of Allah, the Exalted.
And Allah knows best.
