Narrated `Abdullah bin Abu `Aufa: A man displayed some merchandise in the market and took an oath that he had been offered a certain price for it while in fact he had not, in order to cheat a man from the Muslims. So then was revealed:-- "Verily! Those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their oaths..."(3.77)

Hadith Commentary:
It is stated in the verse that swearing false oaths in transactions and thereby causing harm to someone is not the action of a believing man.
Muslims should avoid this habit.

Hadith Commentary:

From the hadith of Ibn Mas‘ud, it is understood that the aforementioned verse was revealed regarding the matter of the well, concerning Hazrat Ash‘ath radi Allahu anhu and his opponent, whereas from the hadith of Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa radi Allahu anhu, it is understood that when a person in the marketplace took a false oath in order to sell his goods, this verse was revealed about that person.
There is no contradiction between these narrations because this verse is general, and both incidents could be the reason for its revelation.

It is also possible that the aforementioned verse had already been revealed in the matter of Hazrat Ash‘ath radi Allahu anhu, but Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa radi Allahu anhu became aware of it after the incident of selling goods in the marketplace, so he thought that this verse pertained to that incident.
The meaning is that each narrated according to his own knowledge.
