Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
➊
Throwing a small spear with a particular technique in a spinning motion is a successful martial art.
The people of Habasha (Abyssinia) had special expertise in this.
In the original narration of Sahih al-Bukhari, it is clarified that the Pure Consort, Aisha (radi Allahu anha), when she watched the game, it was taking place in the mosque. However, in the original narration, it was not specified that the game was related to the technical practice of spears, whereas in the chapter heading, “The arrival of the spear-bearers in the mosque” was mentioned. Therefore, Imam al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) cited the narration of a transmitter, Ibrahim ibn Mundhir, in which it is explicitly stated that they were playing with spears.
➋
Some people are of the opinion that since the mosque is a place of worship, only those things related to worship should be permissible in the mosque, and other activities should not be allowed there.
Such people have expressed the impression regarding this narration that the demonstration of this game was not inside the mosque, but rather outside the mosque or in its adjoining areas.
However, Imam al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) wishes to express expansiveness in this matter: that if the display of weapons and martial arts is done with the intention of jihad, then it is an act of worship, and such worship can be performed in the mosque.
In some chains of this narration, it is mentioned that when the people of Habasha were demonstrating their skill in the mosque, Umar (radi Allahu anhu) happened to come by. He forbade such a demonstration in the mosque, so the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“O Umar (radi Allahu anhu)! Leave them.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jihad wal-Siyar, Hadith: 2901)
The purpose is that if such an act is for the preparation of jihad and for the exaltation of the word of Allah, then it is permitted to do it in the mosque.
(Fath al-Bari: 1/711)
➌
Al-Muhallab (rahimahullah) has said:
Mosques are constructed for the collective affairs of the religion, therefore all those activities from which the religion and its people derive benefit can be performed in the mosque.
Playing with spears is, in reality, an exercise to awaken one’s martial abilities; through it, one learns the method of attacking the enemy and defending oneself. Therefore, it can be played in the mosque. It is also understood from this that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) observed such a high degree of good companionship with his pure wives. Muslims should make such matters a cherished part of their lives and strive fully to implement them.
