Narrated Zaid bin Arqam: We used to speak while in prayer. One of us used to speak to his brother (while in prayer) about his need, till the Verse was revealed:-- "Guard strictly the (five obligatory) prayers, especially the middle (the Best) (`Asr) Prayer and stand before Allah with obedience (and not to speak to others during the prayers)." Then we were ordered not to speak in the prayers.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
By the word "qanitin" are meant those who are obedient and remain silent.
Mujahid said that "qunut" is to perform the prayer with humility and submissiveness, standing for a long time with proper etiquette.
One should keep the gaze lowered; prayer is the name of humbling both the outward and inward self in the Divine Court with helplessness.
In the verse, by "qunut" is meant remaining silent during the prayer.
(Fath al-Bari)
The kunyah of Hazrat Zayd ibn Arqam radi Allahu anhu is Abu Amr.
He was an Ansari from the Khazraj tribe.
He settled in Kufa.
He passed away in 66 AH.
Radi Allahu anhu.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
➊
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes that the correct meaning of the verse is exactly what is established from the hadith, that is, by "qunut" is meant silence. However, this silence does not mean absolute quietness, but rather refraining from speaking to people. Otherwise, remaining silent in prayer is not the objective; rather, the entire prayer is an act of worship through the recitation of the Qur'an and remembrance (adhkar).
(Fath al-Bari: 8/250)
➋
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established a chapter heading for this hadith in these words:
(Bab ma yunha min al-kalam fi al-salat)
"Chapter: What is prohibited of speech during prayer."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-‘Amal fi al-Salat, Chapter: 2)
The perfection of obedience for a person is that he refrains from everything that becomes an obstacle to nearness and presence (before Allah); speech also becomes such an obstacle.
Therefore, from the noble verse, the prohibition of conversation during prayer is established.
And Allah knows best.
