Hadith Commentary: Imam Bukhari mentioned the chain of narration from Abdullah bin Waleed because in it there is explicit clarification that the hadith is marfu‘ (attributed directly to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). This is found as a connected (mawsool) narration in Sufyan Thawri’s Jami‘.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
This noble verse applies to every person who does not accept Islam as a creed and way of life, but, for worldly benefit, loudly proclaims himself to be a Muslim. And he makes Allah a witness to the truthfulness of his actions and words, even though he is the worst of disputants in presenting falsehood as truth. In the hadith, three signs of a hypocrite are mentioned: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he disputes, he resorts to abuse. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Iman, Hadith: 33)
2.
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned another chain of narration at the end of the hadith so that certain matters may be clarified:
a.
This hadith, in reality, is marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), as it is narrated in a connected form in the collection of Sufyan al-Thawri.
b.
The hearing (sama‘) of Sufyan from his teacher Ibn Jurayj is established, because in the presented narration he has transmitted it with the wording of direct narration (bi-sighat al-tahdith).
