Hadith Commentary:
The meaning is that by being miserly, do not throw yourselves into destruction.
Imam Muslim and others have narrated from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) that a Muslim entered into the ranks of the Romans (disbelievers) during battle. The people said, "He has thrown himself into destruction."
Abu Ayyub (radi Allahu anhu) said, "This is not the meaning of the verse:
﴿وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ﴾ (al-Baqarah: 195)
This verse was revealed about us, the Ansar. When the Muslims became numerous, we said, 'Now we will stay in our homes and tend to our wealth and possessions.'
At that time, Allah revealed this verse, so 'destruction' (tahlukah) here means staying at home and abandoning jihad."
In the Tafsir of Ibn Jarir, it is mentioned that a person, during battle, attacked the disbelievers alone and was killed. The people began to say, "He has thrown his life into destruction."

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Spending in the way of Allah means that if you do not spend for the elevation of Allah’s religion and instead give preference to your personal interests, then this will be a cause of destruction for you in this world and a cause of ruin in the Hereafter.
The result will be that in this world you will be overcome and humiliated by the disbelievers, and in the Hereafter you will be strictly questioned about this.

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (radi Allahu anhu) explains the background of this verse in these words:
When the Muslims became numerous, we said:
Now we will stay at home and tend to our wealth and possessions.
At that time, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse, meaning that “destruction” refers to staying at home and abandoning jihad.
(Tafsir Jami‘ al-Bayan fi Ta’wil al-Qur’an: 3/588, 589;
Shu‘ab al-Iman: 5/408)
Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib (radi Allahu anhu) says:
This verse was revealed about the person who continues to commit sin after sin and then says that the door of repentance has been closed for him.
In this way, he throws himself into the pit of destruction.
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Jihad, Hadith: 2512)
➌
Some scholars are of the opinion that this verse was revealed concerning the Ansar, who used to give much charity and alms, but once they were afflicted by famine, they stopped spending and began to act with miserliness. Upon this, Allah the Exalted admonished them.
There is no doubt that all the aforementioned situations are forms of destruction: abandoning jihad or not spending one’s wealth in jihad are certainly such behaviors by which the enemy will become strong and the Muslims will become weak, the result of which is devastation and ruin.
