Hadith 4515

Then that person asked, "Well, tell me, what is your belief regarding Uthman and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both)?" He replied, "Allah has forgiven Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) for his fault, but you do not consider this forgiveness to be good. As for Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he was the cousin of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his son-in-law." And with a gesture of his hand, he indicated, "Look, his house was adjacent to the house of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:

The rejected Khariji would criticize Hazrat Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) greatly, claiming that he fled from the Battle of Uhud. He would also hold Hazrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) in contempt for having fought against Muslims. Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) refuted him in the best manner. The objector was a rejected Khariji and would present Qur’anic verses out of context. There are many such people who, by using verses out of place, become a cause of misguidance for others. Indeed, it is true:

“And He guides many thereby, and He misguides thereby only the defiantly disobedient.” ()

Hadith Commentary:

The questioner belonged to the Khawarij, who acknowledged the virtue of the two Shaykhs (Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu and Umar radi Allahu anhu), but would disparage the two sons-in-law (khatnayn), Uthman radi Allahu anhu and Ali radi Allahu anhu.

This Khariji objected to Uthman radi Allahu anhu by saying that he fled from the battlefield on the day of the Battle of Uhud. Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu replied to him by citing the statement of Allah, the Exalted:
“Indeed, Allah has already pardoned them.” ()
When Allah, the Exalted, has pardoned them, then what is the meaning of making them a target of blame or criticism in such circumstances? This means that you are not pleased with Allah’s pardon regarding Uthman radi Allahu anhu.

As for Ali radi Allahu anhu, he was, in terms of rank and status, very close to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, because on the southern side of the Prophet’s Mosque were the chambers of Aisha radi Allahu anha and Hafsa radi Allahu anha.
Between them was the chamber of Fatimah radi Allahu anha, and behind them were the chambers of the other pure wives.
If the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was displeased with Ali radi Allahu anhu, then why would he have given him a place to reside so close to himself? Therefore, this objection of the Khawarij is based on ill intent, and their Qur’anic argument is also misplaced and inappropriate.
There are many such people who, by using Qur’anic verses out of context, become a cause of misguidance for others.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
