Narrated Salama: When the Divine Revelation: "For those who can fast, they had a choice either fast, or feed a poor for every day," (2.184) was revealed, it was permissible for one to give a ransom and give up fasting, till the Verse succeeding it was revealed and abrogated it.

Hadith Commentary:

And Yazid bin Abi Ubaid remained alive until 146 AH or 147 AH, and it was for this reason that Makki bin Ibrahim, the shaykh of Imam Bukhari, met Yazid bin Abi Ubaid.
Most of Imam Bukhari’s thulathiyyat (three-link chains) are narrated through this route.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The meaning of (يُطِيقُونَهُ):
If the meaning is taken as "those who are able," then this verse is abrogated, as stated by Salamah bin Akwa‘ radi Allahu anhu, who was among the senior Companions (kibar sahabah) radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in.
And if the meaning is taken as "those who are unable," then this verse is not abrogated, as is the position of Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu.
According to him, this verse pertains to extremely elderly persons.
2.
Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlawi rahimahullah has provided another explanation of this verse. He states:
Those who have the ability to provide food should pay the charity of Fitr (sadaqat al-fitr) as compensation (fidya). However, an objection is raised that in this way, the pronoun would precede its referent, which is not correct.
The answer given is that although "food" (ta‘am) is mentioned later in wording, it is actually prior in rank, therefore this objection holds no weight.
In this verse, after the rulings of fasting (sawm), the mention of the charity of Fitr (sadaqat al-fitr) is made, while in the other verse, after the issues of Ramadan, the mention of the Takbirat of Eid is made.
