Hadith Commentary:
From this it is understood that the passing of Anas ibn Malik (radi Allahu anhu) occurred at the very end among all the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum). Ibn Abd al-Barr said that after Anas (radi Allahu anhu), no Companion remained alive in the world.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Before the command for the change of the qiblah was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was intensely awaiting the end of the leadership of Bani Isra’il, believing that now the centrality of Bayt al-Maqdis should also come to an end, and that the time was near to turn towards the true Abrahamic center. In this noble verse, this background is described. Although this verse is recited later in order, in terms of meaning it is prior. This is because, after the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) arrived in Madinah al-Tayyibah, he continued to pray facing Bayt al-Maqdis according to Allah’s command, and he wished that his qiblah would be made the Sacred Mosque (Masjid al-Haram). Accordingly, the aforementioned verses were revealed and the wish of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was fulfilled.
➋
It should be noted that among the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) who prayed facing both Bayt al-Maqdis and the Ka‘bah, Anas (radi Allahu anhu) was the last to pass away. Anas (radi Allahu anhu), while residing in Basrah, stated this in the last part of his life. He lived for 103 years and passed away in the year 90 AH. However, there were some Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) who were alive at the time of his death who had accepted Islam after the change of the qiblah. Since they had only prayed facing one qiblah, they are not included in the purview of this hadith. And Allah knows best.
