Hadith Commentary:
It is certain that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained in Makkah Mukarramah for thirteen years after receiving prophethood, whereas in this narration, ten years are mentioned. In reality, after the first revelation descended upon the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the series of revelations was interrupted for three years, which were not counted; that is, after the cessation of revelation (fatrat al-wahy), he resided in Makkah Mukarramah for ten years, and the Qur’an continued to be revealed to him. After that, there was never again any interruption.

Among the Arabs, it is customary that after a decade, they do not include the fractions, and in this regard, the three years were not counted. In any case, the Makkan life after prophethood spans thirteen years. (Fath al-Bari: 8/189)

Benefit:
The majority of hadith scholars agree that when revelation began to descend upon the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he was forty years old, and it is also agreed that he remained in Madinah Tayyibah for ten years. According to the narration of Aishah (radi Allahu anha), his total age was sixty-three years, so the Makkan life after prophethood amounts to thirteen years. On this basis, in the previous hadith where ten years in Makkah are mentioned, it means that the period of cessation of revelation (fatrat al-wahy), which is three years, is not included in it; that is, including the fatrat al-wahy, it is thirteen years, and without it, ten years, as is in hadith 4446.
