Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
Adi bin Hatim radi Allahu anhu was from the tribe of Tayy.
His father is the same Hatim al-Tai whose name is world-renowned for generosity.
Adi radi Allahu anhu introduced himself to Umar radi Allahu anhu, to which Umar radi Allahu anhu replied as mentioned in the narration.
Upon this, Adi radi Allahu anhu said that now that you know my situation and recognize my worth, I no longer feel any regret that others were called before me and I was not.
Adi bin Hatim radi Allahu anhu was previously a Christian; his sister was captured by the cavalry of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam freed her without ransom due to her family honor.
Afterwards, at his sister’s urging, Adi bin Hatim radi Allahu anhu presented himself in the service of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and became Muslim.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah traced the lineage of Adi bin Hatim back to Saba, who was once the queen of Yemen.
Further, Hafiz sahib states:
“Wa akhraja Muslimun min wajhin akhar ‘an ‘Adi bin Hatim qala ataytu ‘Umar faqala inna awwala sadaqatin bayyadat wajha Rasulillah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam wa wujuha ashabihi sadaqatu Tayy ji’tu biha ila al-Nabiyyi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam wa zada Ahmad fi awwalihi ataytu ‘Umar fi unas min qawmi faja‘ala yu‘rid ‘anni fa istaqbalatuhu faqultu ata‘rifuni fa dhakara nahwa ma awradahu al-Bukhari wa nahwa ma awradahu Muslim jami‘an (Fath)”
That is, Umar radi Allahu anhu said that the very first charity (sadaqah) which, upon being seen, made the face of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the faces of his Companions radi Allahu anhum shine with happiness was the charity presented by the tribe of Tayy, which I myself brought to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
Imam Ahmad added at the beginning that I came to Umar radi Allahu anhu with some people from my tribe, so he turned away from me. Then I came before him and said what is mentioned in the narration, which both Bukhari and Muslim have recorded.
Umar radi Allahu anhu’s turning away was only because he was already acquainted with me; at that time, it was necessary to pay attention to the newcomers.
From this, the great esteem in which Adi bin Hatim radi Allahu anhu was held by Umar radi Allahu anhu is established.
Radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in.
Adi bin Hatim radi Allahu anhu came to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in Sha‘ban, 7 AH, and later settled in Kufa.
He was with Ali radi Allahu anhu in the Battle of Jamal.
He passed away in Kufa in 67 AH at the age of one hundred and twenty years.
His father, Hatim al-Tai, was renowned for his generosity.
The word “Tai” is an attribution to the tribe of Tayy.
Conclusion:
With the help of Allah Ta‘ala, last year in Srinagar, on 25-8-1972, I took pen in hand to draft this section. Throughout the year, in travel and at home, this service was carried out, and today, while residing at my humble abode, I am completing the drafting of this work.
Without exaggeration, the translation, text, and explanations have been committed to writing after much contemplation and reflection.
And afterwards, they have been reviewed repeatedly, yet the possibility of error and oversight remains, for which I await, with much gratitude, correction from the scholars and experts of the field.
I respectfully request the esteemed readers and well-wishers that, during their study, they remember this humble one in their prayers, so that this service may be completed, which is the sole purpose of my life.
It is what I have made my constant companion.
I am deeply grateful to all those whose support and prayers have accompanied me, and I pray for all of them that Allah, by the blessing of His beloved’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam pure words, grants us all the blessings of both worlds.
Especially, after departing from this world, may this ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah) become a means of salvation for all of us, and on the Day of Resurrection, may we all attain the great intercession (shafa‘at kubra) of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
O Allah! Just as You have brought me this far, likewise grant us the ability to complete this service to the end, and protect the pen from error, for everything is in Your power alone.

Hadith Commentary:
According to one narration, Umar radi Allahu anhu said to Adi radi Allahu anhu that the very first charity (sadaqah) which caused the faces of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and his noble Companions radi Allahu anhum to shine with joy was the charity from the tribe of Tayy, which you brought.
This has been narrated by Imam Muslim rahimahullah.
(Sahih Muslim, Fada’il al-Sahabah, Hadith: 6449(2523))
According to the narration of Imam Tirmidhi rahimahullah, Adi bin Hatim radi Allahu anhu says that when I came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in the mosque, he said:
“This is Adi bin Hatim.”
Before this, he had said:
“I have hope from Allah that He will place his hand in my hand.”
