Hadith 4391

Narrated Alqama: We were sitting with Ibn Masud when Khabbab came and said, "O Abu `Abdur-Rahman! Can these young fellows recite Qur'an as you do?" Ibn Mas`ud said, "If you wish I can order one of them to recite (Qur'an) for you ." Khabbab replied, "Yes. "Ibn Mas`ud said, "Recite, O 'Alqama!" On that, Zaid bin Hudair, the brother of Ziyad bin Hudair said, (to Ibn Mas`ud), "Why have you ordered 'Alqama to recite though he does not recite better than we?" Ibn Mas`ud said, "If you like, I would tell you what the Prophet said about your nation and his (i.e. 'Alqama's) nation." So I recited fifty Verses from Sura-Maryam. `Abdullah (bin Mas`ud) said to Khabbab, "What do you think (about 'Alqama's recitation)?" Khabbab said, "He has recited well." `Abdullah said, "Whatever I recite, 'Alqama recites." Then `Abdullah turned towards Khabbab and saw that he was wearing a gold ring, whereupon he said, "Hasn't the time for its throwing away come yet?" Khabbab said, "You will not see me wearing it after today," and he throw it away.

Hadith Commentary:
Zayd ibn Hudayr was from the tribe of Banu Asad. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) identified Juhaynah as being from Banu Asad and Ghatafan, and Alqamah was from the tribe of Nakha'.
Imam Ahmad and Al-Bazzar have narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to supplicate for the tribe of Nakha', praising them so much that I wished I too had been from that tribe.
Abu Nu'aym has connected the narration of Ghundar in his Mustakhraj.
Perhaps Khabbab considered wearing gold to be disliked in the sense of tanzih (discouraged but not sinful).
Upon the admonition of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu) that wearing gold is forbidden, he removed and discarded that ring.

Hadith Commentary:

The relevance of this hadith to the chapter heading is as follows: in this hadith, there is mention of the virtues of Alqamah, who belonged to the famous Yemeni tribe of Nakha‘. It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) once supplicated so much or praised the tribe of Nakha‘ to such an extent that I began to wish I were from the tribe of Nakha‘.
(Musnad Ahmad: 4/84.
And al-Albani’s al-Silsilah al-Sahihah, hadith: 3435)
In contrast, Zayd ibn Hudayr was from the tribe of Banu Asad, about which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) expressed censure, saying that the tribe of Juhaynah is better than Banu Asad and Ghatafan.
Because of this virtue, Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu) preferred the recitation (qira’ah) of Alqamah.

According to Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu), in terms of being students, both were of equal standing, but Alqamah’s lineage was far superior to that of Zayd, and from this, Alqamah’s virtue is established.
This hadith also shows that some rulings of Islam were unknown to the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum), but when the reality became clear to them, they would immediately retract their previous position.
