Abu Raja' added: When the Prophet sent with (Allah's) Message, I was a boy working as a shepherd of my family camels. When we heard the news about the appearance of the Prophet, we ran to the fire, i.e. to Musailima al-Kadhdhab.

Hadith Commentary:
Abu Raja’ initially became a follower of Musaylimah the Liar, but then Allah granted him the ability to accept Islam. However, he did not see the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Hadith Commentary:
1.
In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), people used to greatly venerate the month of Rajab.
When this month would arrive, they would cease mutual fighting and conflict, and would say that the month of Rajab is the month for laying down arms.
From this hadith, it is understood that Abu Raja’ was among those who had pledged allegiance to Musaylimah the Liar from among his people and had accepted his authority.
The reason for this was that from Banu Tamim, a woman named Sajah had also claimed prophethood.
Her people pledged allegiance to her.
Then, when she learned of the circumstances of Musaylimah the Liar, she came to him, deceitfully married him, and then both the tribes of the husband and wife agreed upon obedience to Musaylimah.
(Fath al-Bari: 8/114)
Abu Raja’ lived during the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) but was deprived of the honor of being a Companion (sahabi). Afterward, he became Muslim and supported Aisha (radi Allahu anha) in the Battle of Jamal.
In this hadith, there is mention of Musaylimah the Liar; therefore, Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has mentioned it here.
