Narrated Jarir: While I was at Yemen, I met two men from Yemen called Dhu Kala and Dhu `Amr, and I started telling them about Allah's Apostle. Dhu `Amr said to me, "If what you are saying about your friend (i.e. the Prophet) is true, then he has died three days ago." Then both of them accompanied me to Medina, and when we had covered some distance on the way to Medina, we saw some riders coming from Medina. We asked them and they said, "Allah's Apostle has died and Abu Bakr has been appointed as the Caliph and the people are in a good state.' Then they said, "Tell your friend (Abu Bakr) that we have come (to visit him), and if Allah will, we will come again." So they both returned to Yemen. When I told Abu Bakr their statement, he said to me, "I wish you had brought them (to me)." Afterwards I met Dhu `Amr, and he said to me, "O Jarir! You have done a favor to me and I am going to tell you something, i.e. you, the nation of 'Arabs, will remain prosperous as long as you choose and appoint another chief whenever a former one is dead. But if authority is obtained by the power of the sword, then the rulers will become kings who will get angry, as kings get angry, and will be delighted as kings get delighted."

Hadith Commentary:
The journey of Jarir bin Abdullah Bajali radi Allahu anhu to Yemen was for the purpose of inviting people to Islam.
The journey to demolish Dhu al-Khalasah was a different one.
On the way, Dhu ‘Amr met him and informed him of the news of the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passing, upon which three days had already passed.
Dhu ‘Amr must have received this news through some means.
In the Deobandi translation of Bukhari, it is written here that three years had passed since the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passing.
This is, rationally, completely incorrect.
Because even the duration of the caliphate of Siddiq (Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu) was not three years.
Maulana Waheed al-Zaman rahimahullah has translated it as three days, which is what we have quoted, and this is correct.
The final advice of Dhu ‘Amr mentioned here turned out to be absolutely true.
Up until the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (Khulafa’ al-Rashidun), the caliphate continued to be established through the consultation and counsel of the Muslims.
After that era, people began to become kings by force, like Kisra (the Persian emperor) and Caesar (the Roman emperor), and the unity of the Muslims was scattered.
When Amir Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu announced the caliphate of Yazid, many insightful Muslims clearly stated that by abandoning the Sunnah of the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, you are now reviving the tradition of Kisra and Caesar.
In any case, the foundation of the Islamic caliphate is on: ﴿وَأَمْرُهُمْ شُورَى بَيْنَهُمْ﴾ (), which, when developed, has led to today’s democracy.
Although there are many flaws in it, nevertheless, it is a faint reflection of consultation (shura).

Hadith Commentary:
1.
Jareer (radi Allahu anhu) was present with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada’). Thus, he himself narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to him on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage:
“Make the people quiet so that I may say something to them.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-‘Ilm, Hadith: 121)
Perhaps after this, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent him to Yemen, first to destroy the idol of Dhu’l-Khalasah, then to invite the people to Islam. Accordingly, Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has transmitted a narration from al-Tabarani that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) dispatched Jareer (radi Allahu anhu) to Yemen so that he would fight the people and invite them to Islam.
(al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir by al-Tabarani: 2/334)
From this, it is understood that the destruction of Dhu’l-Khalasah and the invitation to tawhid (monotheism) were separate incidents. In any case, when he completed his mission, he planned to return to Madinah al-Tayyibah.
During this time, Dhu’l-Kila‘ and Dhu ‘Amr were also with him.
The things that Dhu ‘Amr said to Jareer (radi Allahu anhu) were certainly known to him from his study of the earlier scriptures, because he was a scholar among the People of the Book and had complete knowledge regarding the previous books.
The last thing that Dhu ‘Amr said also turned out to be correct.
2.
Until the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (khulafa’ al-rashidun, radi Allahu anhum), the caliphate among the Muslims was established through mutual consultation. After that, rule began to be established by force, and then the unity of the Muslims was scattered, just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“After me, the caliphate will remain for thirty years, then there will begin the era of kingship.”
(Musnad Ahmad: 5/221)
In any case, both of these individuals were Muslims and were coming to Madinah al-Tayyibah out of longing to visit the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but on the way, when they learned of his passing, they said that they were returning to Yemen for their needs, hoping that soon they would come to visit the caliph. That is, their return was not due to apostasy.
