Hadith 4350

Narrated Buraida: The Prophet sent `Ali to Khalid to bring the Khumus (of the booty) and I hated `Ali, and `Ali had taken a bath (after a sexual act with a slave-girl from the Khumus). I said to Khalid, "Don't you see this (i.e. `Ali)?" When we reached the Prophet I mentioned that to him. He said, "O Buraida! Do you hate `Ali?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Do you hate him, for he deserves more than that from the Khumlus."

Hadith Commentary:
In another narration, it is stated that Buraidah (radi Allahu anhu) said: "So I began to love Ali (radi Allahu anhu) the most."
In the narration of Imam Ahmad, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Do not bear enmity towards Ali (radi Allahu anhu), he is from me and I am from him, and after me, he is your guardian (wali)."
In one narration, it is stated that when I complained, the face of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) turned red.
He said: "Whoever's guardian (wali) I am, Ali (radi Allahu anhu) is also his guardian (wali), may Allah be pleased with him and grant him contentment."
The real matter was that Ali (radi Allahu anhu) had taken a slave woman from the khums (one-fifth share of war booty) who was the best among all the captives, and he had intercourse with her.
Buraidah (radi Allahu anhu) assumed that Ali (radi Allahu anhu) had committed treachery in the spoils of war.
Because of this, he thought ill of him.
However, this was not treachery, because the khums is the share of Allah and His Messenger, and Ali (radi Allahu anhu) was most deserving of it, and perhaps the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had also given him authority for its distribution.
Now, as for having intercourse with the slave woman before istibra’ (waiting period to ensure she is not pregnant), that would be because she was a virgin (bakirah), and according to some scholars, istibra’ is not obligatory for a virgin.
It is also possible that she had become pure from menstruation on that day.
(Wahidi)
In any case, harboring enmity towards Ali (radi Allahu anhu) is not the characteristic of the people of faith.
O Allah, I love Ali as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) commanded.

Hadith Commentary:

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent Ali (radi Allahu anhu) to Yemen to collect the khums (one-fifth share) from the spoils of war from Khalid ibn al-Walid (radi Allahu anhu).
Ali (radi Allahu anhu) took a slave woman from the khums, and then performed a ritual bath (ghusl) in the morning.
Buraidah (radi Allahu anhu) thought that Ali (radi Allahu anhu) had intercourse with the slave woman without waiting for her to menstruate once.
In his view, this was the reason for performing the ritual bath (ghusl).
When this was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he said:
“There is nothing objectionable in Ali (radi Allahu anhu) having intercourse with the slave woman, for his share was much greater than that.”
As for the issue of not waiting for one menstrual cycle, according to Ali’s (radi Allahu anhu) understanding, the slave woman was a virgin, and there was no need for istibra’ (waiting period to ensure she was not pregnant), because the waiting period for a slave woman is only observed to ascertain that she is not pregnant, whereas a virgin slave woman cannot be pregnant.
Therefore, there was no need for istibra’.

In another narration, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to Buraidah (radi Allahu anhu):
“Do not harbor suspicion about Ali (radi Allahu anhu), for he is from me and I am from him. He will be your friend after me.”
(Musnad Ahmad: 5/356. )
Buraidah (radi Allahu anhu) says that after the statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he began to love Ali (radi Allahu anhu), and among all people, Ali (radi Allahu anhu) became the most beloved to him.
