Narrated Abu Burda: Allah's Apostle sent Abu Musa and Mu`adh bin Jabal to Yemen. He sent each of them to administer a province as Yemen consisted of two provinces. The Prophet said (to them), "Facilitate things for the people and do not make things difficult for them (Be kind and lenient (both of you) with the people, and do not be hard on them) and give the people good tidings and do not repulse them. So each of them went to carry on his job. So when any one of them toured his province and happened to come near (the border of the province of) his companion, he would visit him and greet him. Once Mu`adh toured that part of his state which was near (the border of the province of) his companion Abu Musa. Mu`adh came riding his mule till he reached Abu Musa and saw him sitting, and the people had gathered around him. Behold! There was a man tied with his hands behind his neck. Mu`adh said to Abu Musa, "O `Abdullah bin Qais! What is this?" Abu Musa replied. "This man has reverted to Heathenism after embracing Islam." Mu`adh said, "I will not dismount till he is killed." Abu Musa replied, "He has been brought for this purpose, so come down." Mu`adh said, "I will not dismount till he is killed." So Abu Musa ordered that he be killed, and he was killed. Then Mu`adh dismounted and said, "O `Abdullah (bin Qais)! How do you recite the Qur'an ?" Abu Musa said, "I recite the Qur'an regularly at intervals and piecemeal. How do you recite it O Mu`adh?" Mu`adh said, "I sleep in the first part of the night and then get up after having slept for the time devoted for my sleep and then recite as much as Allah has written for me. So I seek Allah's Reward for both my sleep as well as my prayer (at night).

Hadith Commentary:
This was the perfection of the fervor of faith of Mu'adh radi Allahu anhu, that upon seeing an apostate, he immediately remembered that hadith in which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Whoever turns away from Islam, kill him."
Mu'adh radi Allahu anhu did not even consider it appropriate to descend and stay with Abu Musa radi Allahu anhu until the legal punishment of the Shari'ah had been carried out.
Mu'adh radi Allahu anhu was appointed as the governor of the highlands of Yemen, and the lowland region was given to Abu Musa radi Allahu anhu.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam greatly praised the land of Yemen.
It is due to this blessing that many great scholars, jurists, and hadith experts were born there.
The esteemed scholar Allamah Shawkani, a famous Ahl al-Hadith scholar from Yemen, is well-known, and his book of hadith commentary, Nayl al-Awtar, is famous.
O Allah! I have special devotion and love for these elders; unite me with them, Ameen.
O Lord of the worlds.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
(Mikhlaf)
— The place where the governor (khalifah) resides is called "mikhlaf."
Here, it refers to the two regions of Yemen.
One is the upper part on the mountain towards Aden, which was called Mikhlaf A‘la.
Its governor was Mu‘adh ibn Jabal (radi Allahu anhu).
The second part is at the foot of the mountain, which was called Mikhlaf Asfal.
The administration of this area was entrusted to Abu Musa Ash‘ari (radi Allahu anhu).
➋
In Yemen, the Jews had adopted the practice of entering Islam and then apostatizing, with the aim of turning people away from Islam. Thus, in one narration, it is mentioned that the apostate was a Jew.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 4344, 4345)
Although there is no compulsion in entering the religion, after entering, whoever violates its laws is punished. Thus, in Islam, the punishment for apostasy is death.
➌
Such was the perfection of faith of Mu‘adh ibn Jabal (radi Allahu anhu) that upon seeing the apostate, he immediately remembered the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam): "Whoever apostatizes from Islam, kill him."
He did not even consider it appropriate to dismount from his ride until the legal punishment of the Shari‘ah was carried out.
➍
From this hadith, it is understood that whatever is done to gain strength and energy for acts of worship will be a source of reward. In such circumstances, even sleeping, eating, and resting can be hoped to bring reward.
