Hadith 4289

Narrated 'Abdullãh bin 'Umar (ra): Allah's Messenger (saws) entered Makkah through its upper part and he was riding his she-camel. Usãma bin Zaid was his Companion-rider behind him (on the same she-camel). In his company were Bilãl and 'Uthmãn bin Talha, who was one of the Al-Hajabah (who keep the key of the gate of the Ka'bah). When he made his she-camel kneel down in the Mosque (i.e., Al-Masjid al-Haram), he ordered him (i.e., 'Uthman) to bring the key of the Ka'bah. Then Allah's Messenger (saws) entered the Ka'bah along with 'Usãma bin Zaid, Bilãl and 'Uthmãn bin Talha, and he stayed in it for a long period and then came out. The people rushed (to get in) and `Abdullãh bin 'Umar was the first to enter and he found Bilãl standing behind the door. Ibn `Umar asked Bilãl, "Where did Allah's Messenger (saws) offer the Salat(prayer)?" Bilãl showed him the placewhere he (saws) had offered Salat (prayer).`Abdullah later on said, "I forgot to ask Bilãl how many prostrations (i.e., Rak'a) theProphet offered."

Hadith Commentary:
In the narration of Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu), it is mentioned that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not perform prayer inside the Ka'bah, but in the narration of Bilal (radi Allahu anhu), the performance of prayer is mentioned, and this is the correct version. It is possible that Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was outside and was not aware that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had performed prayer. After completing (the prayer), the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) returned the key of the Ka'bah to Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) and said that this key will always remain with your family.
I have not given it to you, rather Allah, the Exalted, has given it to you, and whoever is unjust will have this key taken away from him.
To this day, this key remains preserved within the same Shaybi family. Whenever the Ka'bah is opened, it is they who come and open it.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) spoke the truth.
In the year 1952 CE, during Hajj, I entered the noble Ka'bah, and at the door, I saw an elder from the Shaybi family, who was a very white-bearded elder. May Allah forgive him.

Hadith Commentary:

There are two routes for entering Makkah Mukarramah:
One is on the western side, which is in the low-lying area; on this side lies the Red Sea, and it is called Asfal Makkah (the lower part of Makkah).
The other route is on the eastern side, which is the upper part, and it is called A‘la Makkah (the upper part of Makkah).
The place from where the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed is called Hajun, which is nowadays known as Jannat al-Mu‘alla.

In a previous hadith, it was mentioned that on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered Khalid ibn al-Walid (radi Allahu anhu) to enter from A‘la Makkah, which is also called Kada’, and he himself entered from Asfal Makkah, which is called Kadi. Whereas in this narration, it is stated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) entered from A‘la Makkah. It appears that after the completion of the conquest of Makkah, when the wealth and belongings were placed in Kada’, before entering the Ka‘bah, he went to Kada’, and from there proceeded to the Ka‘bah. But before the conquest of Makkah, he had entered from Asfal Makkah. With this reconciliation, there remains no contradiction or difference in the narrations.
And Allah knows best.
