Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
They had come to know that wailing (nawh) over the deceased is itself a cause of punishment for the deceased. Therefore, they refrained from this act. Mere tears flowing are not prohibited; what is prohibited is crying out loudly and enumerating the qualities of the deceased.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:

Abdullah bin Rawahah (radi Allahu anhu) was a poet who praised the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
When he fell ill, he experienced a bout of unconsciousness.
Seeing him in this state, his sister lamented over him, as mentioned in the hadith.
Abdullah bin Rawahah (radi Allahu anhu) regained consciousness at that moment and said:
"An angel appeared over my head holding an iron hammer and said: 'Are you really as your sister is saying?' If I had said yes, he would have crushed my head with the hammer."
In another narration, it is mentioned that after this incident, he forbade his sister from weeping over him. Thus, when news of his martyrdom in the Battle of Mu'tah reached her, his sister exercised patience and did not weep at all.

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has mentioned this hadith here for the reason that the illness in which he became unconscious was not the illness in which he died.
His death occurred after this incident, in the Battle of Mu'tah.
