Hadith 4264

Narrated 'Amir: Whenever Ibn `Umar greeted the son of Ja`far, he used to say (to him), "Assalam 'Alaika (i.e. peace be on you) O the son of two-winged person."

Hadith Commentary:

O son of the one with two wings! Peace be upon you. The name of the son of Ja‘far (radi Allahu anhu) was ‘Abdullah.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) states: "So, what is meant by 'the two wings' is an angelic attribute and a spiritual strength that was granted to Ja‘far (radi Allahu anhu)." That is, al-Suhayli said that by "the two wings" is meant the angelic qualities and spiritual power that were given to Ja‘far (radi Allahu anhu).

However, "And when no report is established regarding the manner of these wings, then we believe in them without delving into their reality." (Fath al-Bari)

That is, when there is no authentic report regarding the nature of these wings, we do not engage in investigating their reality; rather, we believe in them as they have been mentioned in the hadith.

Hadith Commentary:

After the martyrdom of Zayd ibn Harithah (radi Allahu anhu) in the Battle of Mu'tah, Ja'far (radi Allahu anhu) swiftly took up the banner and began fighting the enemy. When the battle intensified, he leapt from his horse, and while fighting, his right hand was severed by a blow from the enemy. After that, he took the banner in his left hand and continued to hold it firmly until his left hand was also cut off, and thus he was martyred. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Allah, the Exalted, has granted him, in place of his two arms, two wings in Paradise with which he flies wherever he wishes."
(Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah: 3/226, Hadith No. 1226.)
For this reason, his title became Ja'far al-Tayyar (the Flyer) and Ja'far Dhu’l-Janahayn (the Possessor of Two Wings).

The nature of these two wings is not described in any hadith, therefore we accept them as a reality and have faith in them, and we consign the knowledge of their exact nature to Allah, and we do not interpret them in any way. Some people interpret this to mean that what is intended is an angelic attribute and spiritual strength that was granted to Ja'far (radi Allahu anhu), but we do not agree with this interpretation at all. And Allah knows best.
