`Abdullah bin `Umar said: "Allah's Apostle appointed Zaid bin Haritha as the commander of the army during the Ghazwa of Mu'tah and said, "If Zaid is martyred, Ja`far should take over his position, and if Ja`far is martyred, `Abdullah bin Rawaha should take over his position.' " `Abdulla-h bin `Umar further said, "I was present amongst them in that battle and we searched for Ja`far bin Abi Talib and found his body amongst the bodies of the martyred ones, and found over ninety wounds over his body, caused by stabs or shots (of arrows).

Hadith Commentary:
It is clearly evident from this hadith that if the Noble Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had knowledge of the unseen (ghayb), then he would never have allowed this loss to occur, and would have prevented the honored martyrs from becoming commanders in the first place. However, only Allah possesses knowledge of the unseen.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was not a knower of the unseen; if he had been, such losses would never have occurred.
In any case, according to the prophecy of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), when Zayd ibn Harithah (radi Allahu anhu) was martyred in battle, Ja'far (radi Allahu anhu) took up the standard.
During the battle, when the Romans cut off Ja'far’s (radi Allahu anhu) right hand, he took the Islamic flag in his other hand. When that hand was also cut off and he was martyred, Abdullah ibn Rawahah (radi Allahu anhu) took hold of the Islamic flag.
When he too was martyred, Khalid ibn al-Walid (radi Allahu anhu) took the flag into his own hands.
Then Allah, the Exalted, granted the Muslims victory and help.
➋
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has written that when all three commanders were martyred, the Muslims buried these noble companions in a single grave.
Radi Allahu ta'ala anhum.
