Narrated Ibn `Abbas: I do not know whether the Prophet forbade the eating of donkey-meat (temporarily) because they were the beasts of burden for the people, and he disliked that their means of transportation should be lost, or he forbade it on the day of Khaibar permanently.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
1.
On the day of Khaybar, the number of donkeys that were slaughtered was twenty or thirty.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent Hazrat Talhah (radi Allahu anhu) to announce that the pots of meat should be overturned and under no circumstances should their meat be consumed.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Dhaba’ih wa al-Sayd, Hadith: 5510.)
2.
As for the reason for the prohibition of these domestic donkeys, there is consensus among the scholars of the Ummah, as is evident from the aforementioned narrations.
The reasons for the prohibition have been stated as follows:
➊.
These donkeys from the spoils of war (mal al-ghanīmah) were cooked before being distributed.
Their khums (one-fifth share) had not been paid.
➋.
There was a fear that the pack donkeys would be depleted.
There were not enough mounts in sufficient quantity to reach Madinah.
➌.
There was no aspect of permissibility in them personally.
The reasons for their intrinsic prohibition are stated as follows:
➍.
They belong to those animals that possess fangs (canines).
➎.
There is a prominent aspect of foolishness in them.
Consuming them affects human intellect.
Just as eating the flesh of swine brings about shamelessness and lack of honor.
➏.
These donkeys eat filth, therefore their meat is also impure.
In any case, the position of the majority of the Imams is that the prohibition of donkeys is definitive and permanent.
Details regarding this will be mentioned later in the Book of Slaughtered Animals (Kitab al-Dhaba’ih), insha’Allah ta’ala.
