Hadith 4187

`Abdullah bin `Umar added: "The people were along with the Prophet on the day of Al-Hudaibiya spreading in the shade of the trees. Suddenly the people surrounded the Prophet and started looking at him." `Umar said, "O `Abdullah! Go and see why the people are encircling Allah's Apostle and looking at him." `Abdullah bin `Umar then saw the people giving the Pledge o allegiance to the Prophet. So he also gave the Pledge of allegiance and returned to `Umar who went out in his turn and gave the Pledge of allegiance to the Prophet.'

Hadith Commentary:
On the day of Hudaybiyyah, considering the circumstances that Umar (radi Allahu anhu) witnessed, he was certain that fighting would inevitably take place. Therefore, he told Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) to bring a horse from the Ansari and himself became engaged in preparations.

When he sent his son to fetch the horse, he saw that people were gathering. So he said that his son should also see why the people were gathering.

Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) first inquired about the people's situation and pledged allegiance (bay‘ah). Then he brought the horse and presented himself, and informed his father about the gathering of the people. After that, he pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Apparently, this pledge seemed to be the pledge of Islam (bay‘at al-Islam), so whoever was unaware of Umar’s (radi Allahu anhu) acceptance of Islam, when he heard the word "bay‘ah," thought that Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) had pledged the pledge of Islam before his father. However, this was the pledge of Ridwan (bay‘at al-Ridwan).

A similar incident occurred at the time of the pledge of Islam, the details of which are mentioned in another hadith.

According to that hadith, when it was said that Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) migrated before his father, he would become displeased and would clarify that the people's assumption was incorrect.
