Hadith 4145

Narrated Hisham's father: I started abusing Hassan in front of `Aisha. She said, "Do not abuse him as he used to defend Allah's Apostle (against the infidels). `Aisha added, "Once Hassan took the permission from the Prophet to say poetic verses against the infidels. On that the Prophet said, 'How will you exclude my forefathers (from that)? Hassan replied, 'I will take you out of them as one takes a hair out of the dough." Hisham's father added, "I abused Hassan as he was one of those who spoke against `Aisha."

Hadith Commentary:

Hasan ibn Thabit (radi Allahu anhu) was a panegyrist and eulogist of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and he also had deep, passionate love for him. Despite this, he participated among those who slandered Aisha (radi Allahu anha), for which he remained regretful throughout his life. However, after the prescribed punishment for slander (hadd qadhf), Allah the Exalted made it an expiation for his sin.

Aisha (radi Allahu anha) did not like that Hasan (radi Allahu anhu) be mentioned with harsh words in her presence. She used to say: Hasan (radi Allahu anhu) was a eulogist of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and used to respond to the satire of the disbelievers. In any case, it was not correct in any way for these individuals to agree with the words of the enemies of the religion.
