Narrated Sahl bin Abi Hathma: (describing the Fear prayer): The Imam stands up facing the Qibla and one batch of them (i.e. the army) (out of the two) prays along with him and the other batch faces the enemy. The Imam offers one rak`a with the first batch they themselves stand up alone and offer one bowing and two prostrations while they are still in their place, and then go away to relieve the second batch, and the second batch comes (and takes the place of the first batch in the prayer behind the Imam) and he offers the second rak`a with them. So he completes his two-rak`at and then the second batch bows and prostrates two prostrations (i.e. complete their second rak`a and thus all complete their prayer).

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has narrated this hadith because it explicitly states that Salih bin Khawat rahimahullah narrated this hadith from Sahl bin Abi Hathmah radi Allahu anhu, whereas in the previous hadith this intermediary was ambiguous.
➋
It should be noted that Sahl bin Abi Hathmah radi Allahu anhu was of a young age during the Prophetic era. When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passed away, his age was only eight years.
➌
Some narrations indicate that Sahl radi Allahu anhu pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam under the tree and accompanied him in all expeditions except Badr. In the Battle of Uhud, he participated as a guide. However, a group of scholars has stated that these attributes do not belong to Sahl, but rather to his father. From the narrations, it appears that Salih bin Khawat actually learned this method of the prayer of fear (salat al-khawf) not from Sahl, but from his father. (Fath al-Bari: 7/531)
However, Allamah ‘Ayni rahimahullah has written, referencing Waqidi, that when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passed away, Sahl bin Abi Hathmah radi Allahu anhu was eight years old, but he memorized the hadiths of the Prophet and narrated them with precision. Abu ‘Amr says that Sahl is counted among the residents of Madinah al-Munawwarah, and it is there that he passed away. (Umdat al-Qari: 12/164)
