Hadith 4115

Narrated `Abdullah bin Abi `Aufa: Allah's Apostle invoked evil upon the clans saying, "Allah, the Revealer of the Holy Book (i.e. the Qur'an), the Quick Taker of the accounts! Please defeat the clans. O Allah! Defeat them and shake them."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:

The disbelievers of Arabia formed a united front and attacked Madinah Tayyibah, but as a result of the supplications of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Allah, the Exalted, foiled the impure intentions of these disbelievers and protected the Muslims.

Reciting this supplication:
at times of calamity and distress is full of goodness and blessing. Its explanation has already been mentioned under Hadith: 2933.

Hadith Commentary:
The disbelievers of Arabia formed a united front and launched a fierce assault against Islam.
This is referred to as the Battle of Ahzab (the Confederates) or the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq).
Allah broke their strength in such a way that thereafter, this series of battles came to an end.

Hadith Commentary:
The subject of the chapter is derived from the phrase "the One Who sent down the Book."
In the mentioned chain of narration, there is explicit clarification of Sufyan's hearing from Ibn Abi Khalid, and of Ibn Abi Khalid's hearing from Abdullah bin Abi Wafa.

Hadith Commentary:
According to this hadith, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplicated to Allah Almighty by referencing the following attribute:
"The One Who sent down the Noble Qur’an."
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah), through these words, has established that the Noble Qur’an is not a creation of Allah Almighty, but rather it is His revealed Book.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplicated by referencing this divine attribute.
This attribute of Allah Almighty is based on reality.
Since Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) was confronted with the tribulation of the claim that the Qur’an is created, he established through multiple evidences that the Noble Qur’an is not a creation of Allah Almighty, but rather it is His revealed Book.
In the hadith presented by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah), there was ‘an‘anah (i.e., a narrator reporting from another without explicitly stating hearing), so he narrated from Imam Humaydi that the chain of narration is based on direct hearing (sama‘).

Hadith Commentary:

In this narration, there is mention of supplicating against the disbelievers for their defeat and for them to flee from the battlefield.

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplicated for their defeat and for them to be afflicted with turmoil, rather than supplicating for their destruction, because after defeat they will not be completely annihilated. Then it is quite possible that they themselves, or someone from their descendants, may become Muslim and, by promoting and spreading Islam, become deserving of salvation in the Hereafter.

Explanation: 1؎ :

O Allah, the One Who sent down the Book and is swift in reckoning! Defeat the armies of the disbelievers, vanquish them, and uproot their footing.

In this regard, there are many other supplications found in the books of hadith. Some of these supplications have been compiled by Imam Nawawi rahimahullah in his book "Al-Adhkar."

Benefits and Issues:

By "groups" are meant the various tribal warrior contingents who, at the time of the Battle of Ahzab, united and attacked Madinah, but due to the trench, were unable to enter the city.

In every difficulty, supplicating to Allah alone is the practice of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and a requirement of tawhid (monotheism).

In supplication (du'a), mentioning the attributes of Allah Almighty appropriate to the occasion and context is Sunnah.
