Hadith Commentary:
1.
This hadith describes the incident of Rajīʿ.
After the Battle of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) dispatched ten devoted companions on a mission.
Among them, the names of seven are as follows:
➊
ʿĀṣim ibn Thābit.
➋
Marṯad ibn Abī Marṯad.
➌
ʿAbdullah ibn Ṭāriq.
➍
Khubayb ibn ʿAdiyy.
➎
Zayd ibn Dathinnah.
➏
Khālid ibn Bukayr.
➐
Muʿtab ibn ʿUbaydah, who was the maternal brother of ʿAbdullah ibn Ṭāriq.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has written that the remaining three were likely their attendants, which is why their names could not be ascertained, nor has anyone paid attention to this matter.
(Fatḥ al-Bārī: 7/475)
Out of these ten individuals, seven did not trust the promises and covenants of the disbelievers, and thus, displaying their valor, were martyred there.
Allah Almighty accepted the supplication of ʿĀṣim (radi Allahu anhu), and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) conveyed the news of his martyrdom to his noble companions (radi Allahu anhum ajmaʿin).
Among them, ʿAbdullah ibn Ṭāriq (radi Allahu anhu), Khubayb ibn ʿAdiyy (radi Allahu anhu), and Zayd ibn Dathinnah (radi Allahu anhu) were deceived and ultimately captured by the disbelievers.
ʿAbdullah ibn Ṭāriq was also killed there, while the remaining two companions were sold in Makkah al-Mukarramah.
2.
The Quraysh sent several men to retrieve a part of ʿĀṣim’s (radi Allahu anhu) body so that they could confirm his martyrdom, but they were not successful in doing so.
Some have written that Salāfah bint Saʿd had vowed that if she gained power over ʿĀṣim, she would drink wine from his skull, but Allah Almighty protected the body of the martyr ʿĀṣim (radi Allahu anhu) with a swarm of bees.
(Fatḥ al-Bārī: 7/480)
3.
Khubayb ibn ʿAdiyy (radi Allahu anhu) was killed by Abū Surāʿah ʿUqbah ibn Ḥārith.
However, Ibn Isḥāq has narrated that ʿUqbah ibn Ḥārith said:
I did not kill Khubayb ibn ʿAdiyy (radi Allahu anhu) because I was very young at the time; rather, Abū Maysarah ʿAbdarī handed me a spear, then held my hand and moved the spear, piercing it into the body of Khubayb (radi Allahu anhu).
(Fatḥ al-Bārī: 7/481)
