Hadith 4078

Among them were also Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib, Abu Hudhaifah, Al-Yaman, Anas bin Nadr, and Mus'ab bin Umair, may Allah be pleased with them.
Narrated Qatada: We do not know of any tribe amongst the 'Arab tribes who lost more martyrs than Al-Ansar, and they will have superiority on the Day of Resurrection. Anas bin Malik told us that seventy from the Ansar were martyred on the day of Uhud, and seventy on the day (of the battle of) Bir Ma'una, and seventy on the day of Al-Yamama. Anas added, "The battle of Bir Ma'una took place during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle and the battle of Al-Yamama, during the caliphate of Abu Bakr, and it was the day when Musailamah Al-Kadhdhab was killed."

Hadith Commentary:
At Bi’r Ma‘unah, seventy individuals were martyred, all of whom were Ansar and reciters of the Qur’an. They had set out solely for the purpose of preaching, but the disbelievers treacherously martyred them. Further details about them are mentioned in the upcoming hadith, and some of their particulars are also recorded in the subsequent ahadith.

Hadith Commentary:
➊ Among the martyrs of Uhud, six were from the Muhajirun as well, so the number seventy mentioned in the hadith is not for specification but rather for approximation. The meaning is that among the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud from the Ansar and the Muhajirun, the Ansar were greater in number.

➋ The seventy Ansar who were memorizers of the Qur’an (huffaz), reciters (qurra’), and scholars (‘ulama) had set out solely for the purpose of preaching and spreading the religion, but the disbelievers treacherously martyred them. The details of this will be mentioned ahead.

➌ Yamamah is a city in Yemen where Musaylimah the Liar (Kadhdhab) claimed prophethood. During the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (radi Allahu anhu), an army was sent for his suppression, led by Khalid ibn al-Walid (radi Allahu anhu). This battle is very famous in Islamic history; the Muslims faced the enemy with utmost patience and steadfastness. Eventually, Musaylimah the Liar was sent to Hell by Wahshi ibn Harb (radi Allahu anhu), and Allah the Exalted granted victory to the Muslims. In this battle, seventy Ansar were martyred, as Anas (radi Allahu anhu) has explicitly stated. And Allah knows best.
