Narrated `Aisha: Regarding the Holy Verse: "Those who responded (To the call) of Allah And the Apostle (Muhammad), After being wounded, For those of them Who did good deeds And refrained from wrong, there is a great reward." (3.172) She said to `Urwa, "O my nephew! Your father, Az-Zubair and Abu Bakr were amongst them (i.e. those who responded to the call of Allah and the Apostle on the day (of the battle of Uhud). When Allah's Apostle, suffered what he suffered on the day of Uhud and the pagans left, the Prophet was afraid that they might return. So he said, 'Who will go on their (i.e. pagans') track?' He then selected seventy men from amongst them (for this purpose)." (The sub-narrator added, "Abu Bakr and Az- Zubair were amongst them.")

Hadith Commentary:
This pursuit at the conclusion of the Battle of Uhud was undertaken so that the polytheists would not assume that the losses at Uhud had rendered the Muslims exhausted, and that if they were attacked again, they would be successful.
The Muslims demonstrated that even after the great losses at Uhud, they were fully prepared to confront the disbelievers.
In every era of Muslim history, this has been their distinguishing quality: they did not abandon the field out of despair in the face of calamities, but rather confronted circumstances with steadfastness, and ultimately, success was theirs.
Even today, the state of the world of Islam is the same, but despair is disbelief.

Hadith Commentary:
When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) received news that Abu Sufyan and his army, upon reaching the place of Rauha, intended to return in order to inflict further harm upon the Muslims, at that time the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) announced that they should pursue them so that it would become clear to them that the wounds had not weakened the Muslims, nor had they become sluggish in seeking out the enemy.
Seventy Muslims, complying with his command, pursued the enemy.
When they reached the place of Hamra’ al-Asad, Ma‘bad al-Khuza‘i said to Abu Sufyan that an even greater force than the first army was coming in pursuit of you.
Allah, the Exalted, cast terror into Abu Sufyan and his army, so they abandoned their plan to return to Uhud and instead turned towards Makkah.
From some narrations, it is known that among those who pursued the disbelievers of Makkah were, in addition to Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) and Zubair (radi Allahu anhu), also ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu), ‘Uthman (radi Allahu anhu), ‘Ali (radi Allahu anhu), ‘Ammar bin Yasir (radi Allahu anhu), Talhah (radi Allahu anhu), Sa‘d bin Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu), ‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Awf (radi Allahu anhu), Abu ‘Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (radi Allahu anhu), Hudhayfah (radi Allahu anhu), and ‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu). Allah, the Exalted, praised these individuals in the aforementioned verse.

Benefit:
This incident took place the day after the Battle of Uhud. Its details are as follows: When the polytheists had moved several stages away from Uhud, they began to say among themselves, “What foolishness have we committed, that we returned without completely annihilating the Muslims?” So they intended to attack Madinah again. When this news reached, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sent a caravan of seventy men after them to frighten them. Among them were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Zubair ibn al-Awwam radi Allahu anhum. Regarding them, this noble verse was revealed.
