Hadith 4070

Salim bin `Abdullah said' "Allah's Apostle used to invoke evil upon Safwan bin Umaiya, Suhail bin `Amr and Al-Harith bin Hisham. So the Verse was revealed:-- "Not for you (O Muhammad!)......(till the end of Verse) For they are indeed wrong-doers." (3.128)

Hadith Commentary:
These three individuals were disbelievers at that time.
Later, Allah the Exalted granted them the guidance to accept Islam, and perhaps this was the very wisdom due to which Allah the Exalted forbade His Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) from supplicating against them.
It is said that during the Battle of Uhud, Utbah bin Abi Waqqas broke the lower tooth of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and wounded his lower lip, and Abdullah bin Shihab wounded his face, and Abdullah bin Qami’ah struck his cheek with a stone, injuring it.
Two rings of the armor penetrated the blessed cheek of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “May Allah humiliate and disgrace you.”
And so it happened: a mountain goat gored him to death.
Some have said that this (verse) was revealed regarding the story of the Qurra (reciters), when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would invoke curses upon the tribes of Ri’l, Dhakwan, and ‘Usayyah, etc., but the majority hold that this verse was revealed concerning (the events of) Uhud.

Hadith Commentary:
➊ There is a difference of opinion regarding the reason for the revelation of the mentioned verse. The suspended (mu‘allaq) hadith relates to the Battle of Uhud, but these hadiths themselves have no connection to the Battle of Uhud. Since there is disagreement about its cause, a clarification has been provided.

➋ The three individuals mentioned by name in the hadith were granted the ability by Allah, the Exalted, to accept Islam at the time of the Conquest of Makkah. It is possible that for this reason, Allah, the Exalted, forbade His Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) from supplicating against them.

➌ Some narrations indicate that when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) began to supplicate against the tribes of Lihyan, Ri‘l, Dhakwan, and ‘Usayyah, this verse was revealed at that time. However, the correct view is that this verse was revealed regarding those individuals against whom the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplicated due to the events of the Battle of Uhud.
