Narrated Jabir: This Verse: "When two of your parties almost Decided to fall away..." was revealed in our connection, i.e. Bani Salama and Bani Haritha and I would not have liked that, if it was not revealed, for Allah said:-- But Allah was their Protector.....(3.122)

Hadith Commentary:
So how great is the honor of Allah’s friendship (wilayah) that has been granted to us.
In the Battle of Uhud, when Abdullah bin Ubayy turned back with three hundred companions, even the hearts of those Ansar were afflicted with doubt.
But Allah protected them, so they did not abandon the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Hadith Commentary:

By "two groups" (ta'ifatan), what is meant are the tribes of Banu Haritha and Banu Salama, two clans of the Ansar, who, on the return journey to Madinah Tayyibah, began to falter due to the influence of Abdullah ibn Ubayy, the chief of the hypocrites.
Both tribes were also prepared to turn back, but after being counseled, they refrained from this action.

When a verse is revealed in such a manner that it mentions someone’s fault or shortcoming, it is naturally unpleasant for that person. However, in the last part of the verse, their reassurance was revealed, so the sin that appears in the first part is removed by the latter part. It is possible that it was merely a thought in the heart; if there had been a firm intention, then accountability would certainly have occurred, because separating oneself from jihad and not supporting the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is a major sin (kabirah). Allah, exalted is He, neither loves nor helps those who commit major sins.
In any case, in this noble verse there is glad tidings for them, as they were honored with praise from Allah, and they were not held accountable for this bad thought, because this thought did not arise from firm resolve or determination of the heart.
And Allah knows best.
