Hadith Commentary:

The prohibition of alcohol had not been revealed before the Battle of Uhud.
Some of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) consumed alcohol in the morning.
After this, the announcement of jihad was made, and those who had consumed alcohol were martyred in the path of Allah.
If this act had been evil at that time, they would not have been granted the reward of martyrdom.

The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) had a doubt as to how someone who drank alcohol could become a martyr. The purpose of this hadith is to remove that doubt: since the prohibition of alcohol had not yet been revealed, how could the commission of a sin have occurred, and how could deprivation from reward have become necessary? Later, when alcohol was made forbidden, then no Companion ever touched alcohol again; rather, they even broke the vessels in which they used to drink alcohol.
And Allah knows best.
